This is the only book I've read about what it means to be a working artist that tells the real story--all of it, the good and the bad---and what it takes to succeed in the art world. It's a practical guide that demystifies the process of becoming an artist and sustaining a practice--where to study, how to support yourself while getting started, how to find like minded people, where to show, and how to have a career.Keep this book on your work table right next to your, palette, computer, printer, camera, and use it as inspiration and an invaluable resource.
As a career consultant who assists visual artists, among professionals in other creative fields, I found this book to be a comprehensive career planning and job hunting guide targeted to a highly specialized group. It offers an encyclopedia of practical information, well-organized and clearly written. Most artists, as a group of professionals with highly technical skills, often overlook the essentials that determine success or failure in their career. The authors, Stacy and Angie, fill in all the gaps with factual information and appropriate advice. Any artist who wants to take their career seriously needs to read this book. I am recommending it to all my visual artist clients.
Even as someone beginning an art career later in life than most, I find this book to be a useful and vital resource in understanding just how much needs to happen outside of the studio as inside. It is all too easy to think that talent is all you need to succeed in the arts and that eventually that talent will out. It isn't and it may not. This guide describes the strategies and practices necessary to launching and maintaining a career in the arts.
As a recent BFA graduate this book gave me insight into the art world I wished I had gotten while in school. A true must read for emerging artists such as myself. Would suggest it to be mandatory reading.
It's a useful book about how to write your CV, resume, get in contact with galleries, etc.It was a book we are using for my Senior Seminar class in art. It gives examples and stories of what not to do if you want to apporach a gallery director. As well as other insights. If you're an up coming artist and is confused on what you need to do, this maybe the book for you.
