Thanks to author Andrew Pehanick's efforts, "Bridgeport 1900-1960" is able to show us what life was like in the old Connecticut city.Part of Arcadia Publishing's "Postcard History Series," this book is updated from the first edition and includes 230 images of everything from theatergoers to street scenes, mansions and waterfront activities. Some of them are based on simple photos of fairly random moments in life. Others are advertising for restaurants and services or show local institutions such as the University of Bridgeport, native son P.T. Barnum, or sports fields.Collections like this, organized into themes, do a great deal to save memories and local history and are a perfect gift for historians, librarians and nostalgia buffs.
I was born and raised in Bridgeport, so this collection of photos is especially interesting to me. Plenty has changed since the 1950s, and not much for the better.
