Getting a bit old now, but although it doesn't cover some of the most recent work it is by no means out of date. It remains one of the best introductions to voltage and ligand-gated ion channels and to electrophysiological methods of study. A good entry to the field, with an excellent bibliography of the primary literature. I don't know if I can recommend it at its list price (it is a slim volume), but used it could be a great buy.
Some things are well explained, others just suck. Too wordy. I would recommend to learn about proteins in general and the topic of bioelectricity and that would be ideal.
