'The Light of Paris' is a handsome volume of black-and-white photographs of the landmark buildings of Paris, all taken at dawn or dusk. Everyone has seen pictures of Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe... but not like this. Each building occupies at least a page, and many (like the Institut de France, which also features on the dustjacket) cover two pages. In taking the pictures, Jean-Michel Berts used very long exposures, a technique that gives great depth of field and fine detail, while also keeping moving figures from registering. Hence you see the buildings without the usual crowds and passers-by - not that there would be too many of them at dawn in any case. The buildings are fascinating, but so are the skyscapes - via Berts' lens, the clouds themselves seem monumental. The book also has quite a few photographs of lesser-known buildings that repay close attention. I've been over every page with a magnifying glass, and there's always some new detail that stands out, just as the visitor returning to Paris finds with the city itself. In short, 'The Light of Paris' is a masterpiece of black-and-white photography and a treat for all lovers of Paris.
An amazing artistic piece!
