I received ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITE published by Speedy Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This is an E-Book, published in 2014.My thoughts:I don’t enjoy the E-Book format when working with/reading with younger children. The E Reader, itself, is a distraction and I don’t feel a completeness or wholeness with this format. Part of the reading experience with younger readers is the anticipation of turning the page; the orderly progression of pages. I feel adrift with an E-Book.What age group/grade level is this title aimed at? The pictures (which are stunning) led me to assume it was a ‘picture book’ aimed (generally) at a preschool through 1st grade audience. Yet the vocabulary doesn’t fit with these groupings. And if it is aimed at a higher grouping (say 2nd through 5th grades), then the format doesn’t fit - too many pictures, no captions or descriptions, no access points such as Table of Contents, Index, Notes or Maps or bibliography.Vocabulary words that I found hard to understand (looking at the words from a child’s point of view) are: good-paying (What does that mean to a child?); vertical columns, horizontal girder beams and diagonal beams - all used in the same sentence (I’m dizzy!); ensures integrity (What does that mean?); landmark; staggering; triple-digit; expression of notification; required adherence.These are poor vocabulary choices for young children, especially in a non-fiction book format.The pictures of machinery and construction sites were very clear, crisp and interesting. But where are the captions?There are many construction fact pages, but no maps or pictures used to illustrate these ‘facts’.ex. “20,000 workers helped build the Taj Mahal” in Agra, India. Show me a picture, please, and a map.
