Since I don't sing very much anymore, I look for music books that let me play the melody line. This one kind of switches back and forth, but there's enough melody that I bought it. (I wish online descriptions were always specific about this point. I generally can't buy vocal selections books unless I find them in person. I've made the mistake of buying books that were accompaniment only, thinking I can work with it... but I rarely ever do.)
This is one of the worst editions of vocal selections I've ever purchased. The songs barely resemble the versions from the cast recording. Most of the arrangements are the kind of chords plus doubled melody that you usually only find in old editions of musicals from the Songbook era. I'm stunned that Hal Leonard would put out such a terrible edition for the vocal selections. I thought these kind of arrangements were a thing of the past. I order many vocal selections editions of shows for my work as a studio voice teacher. I feel completely ripped off by this book. It's completely worthless for anything other than fan appreciation. I expect vocal selections editions to be much more than that these days.
One of the greatest musicals written and this score is good too. Not the complete score as you would expect it but good enough to play around and teach the little one.
The arrangements are beautifully composed!
