I have read both versions of this book, and I can summarize this review in one sentence. Actors and actresses, you NEED this book.This is one of, if not the best, book I have read on ALL aspects of the industry. Cathy is simultaneously compassionate, funny, and very honest. There is no sugar-coating. She provides actors with a very unique perspective and gives them a roadmap for mastering "The Room" and presenting yourself with "Charisma". She explains the different types of television and the sequence of the audition process. Additionally, she devotes a good portion of the book to navigating your career in New York or LA (how to survive these markets, what you need to do when you get there, how to get started, how to take care of yourself, etc.) Her experience speaks for her, and I feel absolutely confident that this book has made me smarter auditioner... She stresses preparation and practice.I would personally recommend owning both versions of this book. I will say that I personally loved the second edition. In addition to all of the material covered in the first book, Cathy includes a section on "Going on Tape", where she highlights the do's and don't's of self-taped auditions. She discussed the technological advances that have shaped the industry in the past three years, and what those changes mean for actors. One of my favorite parts of the Second Edition was her interviews with several actors and actresses who are currently working (successfully) in the industry. I found these to be equally informative and inspiring.This book is both a kick in the butt and a nudge in the right direction. It is an easy, informative, and entertaining read.
