My Voice: A Memoir
Download Free (EPUB, PDF)

Angie Martinez is the "Voice of New York". Now, for the first time, she candidly recounts the story of her rise to become an internationally celebrated hip-hop radio icon. In her current reign at Power 105.1 and for nearly two decades at New York's Hot 97, Angie Martinez has had one of the highest rated radio shows in the country. After working her way up as an intern, she burst on the scene as a young female jock whose on-air "Battle of the Beats" segment broke records and became a platform for emerging artists like a young Jay Z. Angie quickly became known for intimate, high-profile interviews, mediating feuds between artists, and taking on the most controversial issues in hip-hop. At age 25, at the height of the East Coast/West Coast rap war, Angie was summoned by Tupac Shakur for what would be his last no-holds-barred interview - which has never aired in its entirety and which she's never discussed in detail until now. Angie shares stories from behind the scenes of her most controversial conversations, from onetime presidential hopeful Barack Obama to superstars like Mary J. Blige and Chris Brown, and describes her emotional, bittersweet final days at Hot 97 and the highly publicized move to Power 105.1. She also opens up about her personal life - from her roots in Washington Heights and her formative years being raised by a single mom in Brooklyn to exploring the lessons that shaped her into the woman she is today. From the Puerto Rican Day Parade to the White House, Angie is universally recognized as a powerful voice in the Latino and hip-hop communities. My Voice gives an inside look at New York City's one-of-a-kind urban radio culture, the changing faces of hip-hop music, and Angie's rise to become the Voice of New York.

When I heard THE Angie Martinez was writing a book, I HAD to buy it. Not borrow it, not download it, not blog skim, actually buy it. So my expectations were to hear juicy stories about the interviews, moments, and highlights in the world of HipHop. There are a couple of juicy tales but this book is STRICTLY about Angie. Her voice. Her experience. Her growth. Her lessons. The juicy tales she did share were those she recognized as impactful to her life and was a lesson in building the woman she is constantly working on. If you have ever avidly listened and followed Angie, you will know that she's honest, fair, and tries to do the right thing in difficult moments. This book is an accurate depiction of the ground breaking, original female, hip hop head that you've come to know on the show with some reasons for why she has made life choices and conducts herself the way she does. She's shared hard life lessons as well as pieces of the highlights. Congratulations Ms. Martinez! Your voice is still ringing and heard after a drilion years!!!

I was so happy when I heard she was coming to Power 105 as I was not the biggest Hot 97 fan and was equally excited for this book to come out. I'm a fast reader and as soon as this downloaded to my kindle,I dove in head first. Admittedly though I'm not done with it but I can tell you that this book is great & easily gets 5 stars. A real hip hop fan will love this memoir. And truth be told,I think any fan of radio personalities and music in general will love this. I'll be done with it in a day or so,it's that good. Simply put, great read by a great person and even greater icon in hip hop. Buy this, you'll love it!

If you're a fan of the culture this book is everything! Angie Martinez got me through some thangs.... Her music I played out so much my cd's are scratched and I can't get past certain tracks! But I couldn't wait to read as soon as the book came in. It really hit home as she spoke about the relationship with her father and it reminded me almost exact to the relationship I have or don't have with mine! I haven't put the book down yet. NBA is on....: and my eyes are glued to the book!

But a story without details is not the best story to tell. Just need more details within the stories she decided to tell. A story about her life should not leave me wondering who, what and where. I know its not a tell all but its just not enough. If she couldn't release the info in its entirety, she should have left it out if the book.

I first met Angie Martinez in the middle of the night just after Hot 97 changed their format from dance to hip hop. I had just started Rap Coalition and Wayne Mayo (producer at Hot) introduced us. I liked her openness and honesty immediately! The value of Angie's career (and book) is not only how she touched so many of us daily through her voice and her being, but how she learned as she came up--by doing. She blazed the trail. I never spent much time with Angie because I got busy with my own career but I always felt a kindred-ship with her. She did what was best for all artists rather than what was best for her and her ratings. She didn't tolerate the clowns in the industry just because they were powerful and didn't take money to play records like some of her compadres. She is genuine and authentic, qualities that are hard to find in the music industry AND hard to find in people in general. This is an awesome book because her perspective is based on truth and realness. She worked her way up and was in it for the love, even when the next generation came up focused solely on making money regardless of their love for hip hop (or lack thereof). Angie definitely overstayed at HOT, waiting until long after it had few redeeming qualities left, but I admire her loyalty and her determination to try and create change. She's such an amazing human being as this honest book illustrates.Everyone should read this book, both for the historical aspect of a brand new radio format in the early 90s that impacted the business of hip hop financially for the better and for the value of seeing that great people do win, when they follow their dreams. Go get 'em Angie! You haven't ever changed a bit. You're 100% down to earth and a true inspiration for this next generation of hip hop fans. Where hip hop lives is actually inside of you!!!

Wonderful book. Lots of history, told by a great. Always the voice of NY, and now global. Salute! Highly recommended!!!

I'm a really big fan of biographies and I love the "overcoming" factor. This book for me was only ok though. Although there were some great moments in the hip hop culture discussed, overall Angie's story didn't really fascinate me. Not to take anything from what Angie has achieved and what she represents, obviously she is a "big deal", but the story itself didn't really leave an impression.

If you know me, you know I read fast and often, so when my role model writes a memoir I'm reading it in one sitting; and I did. I knew much of what she mentioned, but was fascinated to learn what I didn't; or the inside lane on things I THOUGHT I knew. True to her nature as the voice, it was like reading a long, grammatically correct text from a friend pouring her heart out. Simply put, I was glued to the book for the new facts and moments, and reliving the events I heard through out her career. This book is a gift for any hip hop head, and an 'up close and personal' (I had to) conversation with our voice of NY. Yes I have two copies, one was signed and one was bought in as a birthday gift
