I have found this book a must have in my hospice work. I am certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. I refer to this book constantly. I am not certain how to say the following. However, after I read it once, I found myself wanting to review a lot of the referrences the author refers to. My conclusion? Not only is this book very thoughtfully written, it is impecably referrenced, well edited, and well, truly a fine work. I have used many of the author's excellent examples in discussions with my hospice team.
Dr. McPherson's book is an essential, practical tool for anyone who cares for patients who take opioids, whether for acute or chronic pain. After reading this book, you will feel confident that you can start any patient on the right opioid at the right dose. You will even feel more comfortable about routinely managing methadone!This book is comprehensive but simple and very easy to follow. The content is very well-researched, and information is presented in an unambiguous way. The best part about the book, in my opinion, is the use of many demonstrative cases that help you work through practical opioid prescribing problems that are similar to those you are likely to encounter in your practice.This book is highly useful for prescribers of opioids, including physicians, advanced practice nurses. It is ALSO very highly useful for pharmacists and for nurses. I would highly recommend it for trainees in all of these disciplines.Oh, and by the way, it's a pretty funny, entertaining book too. It seems like a pretty impossible thing, but Dr. McPherson has done it: she made opioid dosing an interesting topic.
Dr. McPherson's new book is an amazing addition to the pain management arsenal. She takes a topic that is very difficult to wrap your arms around and makes it funny and engaging. This is an excellent way to get a grasp on opioid conversions!
Dr McPherson has taken a subject that is difficult at best and downright scary at worst and made us feel more confident. I have bought a copy for each of my PharmD pain clerkship students, and now consider it an essential teaching tool.
Dr. McPherson's thorough approach to opioid calculations is helpful for the novice as well as the expert. Her infused humor makes this difficult subject matter very enjoyable. This book is a must for the safe practice of pain management.
Dr. McPherson's book is an outstanding resource. It helped me become confident in my calculations without resorting to a online opioid dose conversion system.I recommend it when I give talks on pain. It is a wonderful resource to give to students, house staff, hospice and palliative care nurses and APNs, CNPs.
This book is very helpful with many case scenarios for adjusting, rotating, and converting one narcotic to another. This book is very useful with tables, charts, and references for optimizing opioid dosing in a variety of different clinical settings. Very useful for nurses, pharmacists and providers!
This is a great book. I recommend it for all prescribers and nurses who work in pain, palliative care, or hosoice setting. I am almost ashamed about how much I learned considering Inhave been in the field for several years. Written in a clear, understandable, and at times humorous way. I read this book while I was preparing for NP exam for Hospice and Palliatve Care certifiation- on which there were absolutely no drug conversion questions. But I am so glad I read this and it immediately impacted my practice.
