Just a quick warning for anybody tempted to buy the e-book version: diagrams are missing (with a label saying they're not licensed for electronic use,) and the formatting of the e-book is bad. You'll have a diagram on one page, and the labels on another, so you have to constantly flip back and forth. If you want Dyce, stick with the paper book version for now, until the publishers can actually figure out how to put an e-book together well.
This text was a required book in my first year vet anatomy course. I must say, the pictures and diagrams are only adequate. Meanwhile, the actual text itself was laborious to read and so full of jargon and unnecessary detail that it literally gave me a splitting headache each time I attempted to read it. Please, please, if this is not a required textbook, don't buy it! There are much better anatomy texts out there!
Not one of my favorite vet textbooks. I find that it jumps around too much and the information isn't arranged very well, at least for me. Some of the pictures are ambiguous - one that comes to mind is a drawing of the canine phalanges where some of the sesamoid bones are drawn in very faintly, like the artist wasn't quite sure if they should be there or not.Maybe I'll appreciate this textbook more when I get to comparative anatomy, but for readability, reliability and clarity on canine anatomy I much prefer Miller's Anatomy of the Dog.Update 1/2/2012: Completed my third and final formal anatomy course in vet school using this text and I still don't like it much at all. I think the approach of trying to cover multiple species in a single book is admirable, but what ends up happening here is a mish-mash of details spread-out over various sections of the book that aren't easy to follow. I also continued to find it frustrating that some information was not presented clearly (whether in picture or textual description), leaving you to wonder what the correct anatomy was for a given topic. Finally, I noticed that the number of errors in the book increased in the later chapters; in particular, I remember the avian chapter having several obvious errors that even I, a novice, noticed right off. Not recommended.
This is without a doubt the worst anatomy book that I have seen. It looked really good online, but don't be fooled. Before entering graduate vet surgery school I taught human anatomy for a few years so I feel like I have a good idea of what should be in an anatomy book, and this book doesn't have any of it. The chapter on canine forelimb anatomy is the clearest example. Rather than looking at the musculature of the antebrachium from an eviscerated but otherwise intact diagram, all it gives you is two dorsal views of transverse cuts. How unhelpful is that?!?! The rest of the book is similarly inadequate. Don't waste your money on this or you'll waste time trying to decipher it.
I bought this book for veterinary school as it was a required textbook. I was so pleased to find this on as it is much more expensive to buy in the bookstore. I really enjoyed this book.As far as medical books go, I thought this one was easy to understand. It does a great job at explaining things and was a perfect supplementation to my class. This really help understand lectures and notes. It helped even more when I needed to study for the test as this is what I reference the most. I was very pleased by the book.
This book can be very helpful. It offers quite a few radiographs which point out many common structures. It's really hard to read straight through, but as a reference it's unbeatable.
This is the third edition of an outstanding textbook written by three veterinary anatomists of exceptional talent and many years of experience. This is one of the few veterinary anatomy textbooks available that addresses multiple species of veterinary interest; it includes sections on canine, equine, ruminant, porcine and avian anatomy. The first half of the text takes a systems approach, covering the comparative anatomy of different organ systems. The second half of the book takes a regional approach to anatomy, with different species treated separately and in detail. The authors also make frequent reference to the clinical significance of anatomical facts.Figures are abundant and excellent, and this latest edition has added more color plates. Few extant textbooks of veterinary anatomy rival this one for the quality and comprehensiveness of illustrations.The Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy can remain a significant reference text to the veterinary student (especially those with multi-species interests) throughout his or her curriculum, as it is a remarkably comprehensive book for its compact size.
This book is great if you have time to sit down and have a good read of it. It is not useful for quick checking of anatomy, yet this is what an atlas is for. If you take the time to read sections entirely it gives you a great understanding of the "big picture" and explains functional anatomy well.
