By the authors of SIDE BY SIDE this is a much more colorful and better organized picture dictionary than the formerly more popular OXFORD PICTURE DICTIONARY. Whenever I bring it to class, if the students don't have it, the first thing atleast 70% will ask me is "Where can I get it ?" - - used with the accompanying flash cards (not included) you can teach entire (and substantive) lessons with just those two things alone... and even without it, you can use it to expand amply from whatever text book you're using. The chapters on the household, occupations, places around town, work activities are especially useful. In my begining classes we learn how to ask each other questions about these subjects, and begin all our classes discussing what we did over the weekend, what we did at work etc. etc. We talk about our house, our family... and all these topics are with Level 1 students, eye to eye (pair work, group work, class discussion)and facilitated by lessons from this book. - - Pictures get students talking and open them up and this is the ultimate resource ! ! !As a tip, the students love looking at the pictures and discussing them, so to keep activities interactive, have students share books... or make worksheets where the students have to exchange information ! ! !
Illustrations are somewhat dated and the colors on some pages need to be sharper but the book is quite thorough and a great pictionary overall.
If I could have only one ESL reference tool in my classroom, it would be the Word by Word Picture Dictionary. This book is an invaluable resource in all ESL/EFL settings--from beginning to advanced, from pre-school through adult, in the U.S. and abroad. We have placed a copy of this book in every classroom. I also encourage all incoming students to make this one of their first purchases. Indeed, Word by Word Picture Dictionary has quickly become the core of our curriculum.
an excellent supplementary text for both children and adults. i think possible to use with all levels depending on how you approach it. each page is thorough and clear. illustrations are cute and easy to read visually. i much prefer them to the computer graphics of the oxford picture dictionaries. i have used this in numerous settings to good effect. students like it a lot. the most essential tool for vocabulary building i've used to date.
One of my specialties is vocabulary, so I'm always looking good visual dictionaries. I've bought half I've found, and most of the rest are on my shopping list. This is a very close second to the Oxford Picture Dictionary as my favorite. It's not as comprehensive and the illustrations are not as good, but the topical arrangement is better and it's easier on your budget. The authors have written several other excellent ESL books. Two of their vocabular books include a basic version of this one and Day By Day: English For Employment Communication. Their Foundations is a conversation book but is also a good vocabulary builder.
I am a self studying Korean learner. I very much recommend this book as a stepping stone tool, especially if you have already grasped the Hangul alphabet and can tie it in with making some words as there are no Romanizations available or any CD that you can follow and learn along with. I still purchased this more as a second step for reading and learning a variety of words. Some of the sections in book include: personal info, family, health, everyday activities, hobbies, money numbers calendar clothes colors foods, home school job travel entertainment nature, shopping travel and descriptions. I also bought McGraw-Hill's Korean Illustrated Dictionary http://www..com/gp/product/0071769005/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i04?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which does have Romanizations (if you are looking for a good beginners dictionary-with CD) as a 1st dictionary and Word by Word for the 2nd one. Hope this helps
We use this book regularly in class. It has the pictures and words along with the dialogue we can use to teach English to many nationalities. The CD is not as useful as the book itself as there are no words for the songs.
Absolutely the best learning tool for Latinos (or really anyone) to master real-life English. It's a picture dictionary with images grouped by theme, and definitions/descriptions of the images written below in English and in Spanish. I used it my first year of teaching English to Latino adults in a job-readiness program, then hauled them back and forth with me to the local community college when I started teaching there. I like that the vocabulary is taught in groups of words where appropriate, because this is how we actually use them. Looking at the pictures while reading the words increases retention and understanding at all levels, as does seeing the words and images grouped by usage rather than alphabetically. If you are a teacher or tutor, check out the questions at the bottom of most pages - they can spark an entire discussion or writing activity to enforce the words covered.Adults and children love to use this book, and I find myself reviewing pages on work-related verbs from time to time to keep my Spanish updated. There are entire pages devoted to various USEFUL topics such as landscaping tools, medical supplies, classroom phrases, emotions, phrasal verbs, outdoor games types of buildings - just about any topic you'd want to teach or learn. These books go perfectly with the entire Side-by-Side teaching series, but you could also use them with any other resource. I own most picture dictionaries on the market, and these are the ones that I'd miss if I lost them. These are the ones my students reach for, too.
