Another reviewer was not exaggerating in stating that the size of this book is insane. The only thing is that they recommend buying the divided edition, but they don't say which one that is! I would have gotten the smaller two volume set if I had known what the ISBN was! The thought of having to haul this book to every class is terrifying to say the least. I'd have paid the extra money just to have this thing halved when I need to tote it.The paper is super thin, not bible thin but close, and while the print isn't uber tiny, it is hitting the threshold for people w/ vision problems.To help out all you people who would like the ISBN for the 2 vol. set, here it is from the back of the enormous book: 9780393930580I'm going to post a picture so that you guys can get an accurate idea of the scale of this thing.Edit: Posted several pics and note the dent it puts into my mattress! I think the price is based on the weight.**** Note that this does not mean that the content is lacking. In fact the content of this volume is amazing and worth the price to have the literature all together. You can however get at least 50% or more of the content from free sources online like gutenburg.org.
I can't rate it more than 3 stars because I was forced to buy it. I also find it humorous that this is the "New Shorter Edition." I'm scared to see what the old longer edition looks like since this book is bigger than my chihuahua.
I liked this book because it had well-written biographies of the authors and a good selection of works by them. What I didn't like was the thinness of the paper and the actual weight of the book. I agree with other commenters that the volume is too heavy, even though it says shorter seventh edition. Carrying this book in the heat to my summer school class was not fun. Since I wasn't going to use this for more than a couple of weeks, I didn't bother getting a new copy. To be fair, it is smaller than some of the major anthologies that Norton publishes.
This book came right on time; It was also in mint condition when it arrived and is a heaping plethora of pages and weight! Be prepared to have to carry some weight around HA. The right book for my American Literature 2 class.
The type is very small, so that's difficult. It really should be on Kindle, they do have an online study guide, but the entire book should be put into Kindle or ebook format. The content of the book is excellent, but it's so heavy. If it must be in physical book form, it would be much better to divide it into four volumes and enlarge the type.
This book is about three thousand very thin pages of almost everything covered in 1800s onwards American Literature class. If you don't find something in the book that's covered in class, chances are it's free online.
Yep, this is another bible-sized anthology of American literature. Nothing new to see here, just another in a long line of ridiculously over-priced anthologies of stories and biographies which are freely available on the internet. Their website is garbage, as well.
The book I ordered never came so I had to find it elsewhere. The book itself is a good book and contains all the American standard authors and works well as a text book for my American Literature class.
