Mastering Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO and Exposure is an excellent guide that I recommend to everyone. This guide is a course in itself. After reading the book I not only understand different techniques to create the perfect photo, I feel as though I am a master of those techniques. Gaining knowledge on ISO speed was really helpful. The information in the book is wonderful for all levels of photographers.

Al Judge, author or photography master? I say both, I have read a couple of his other books and they are all the best of the best. This book, Mastering Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO and Exposure has taught me more than the college-level photography course I took over a year ago. This book should be the textbook for those courses. I was still unclear about many aspects of photography until I found this book. Of course, I took better pictures but I wanted to know what made them better. We can always better ourselves but if we don't know why or how, then we have limits. Al Judge takes away those limits and explains to the reader, very clearly, what kind of effect a certain technique or just a slight change would make to the final product. My pictures always seemed a bit "noisy", but by making better sense of ISO speed, Al has taught me how to correct that problem in such a way that I could actually explain it to someone else. I think that is the best way to judge a book, not just by how you interpret the information, but how you can relay that information to someone else. You can go through and read all of the reviews you want, or you can just buy the book and start taking better pictures right away.

Great book! It hits all the major points of the exposure triangle in a concise and informative manner. Thi s book will make the concepts of photography clear to anyone, even a absolute beginner. Very enjoyable !

I have recently bought a P&S digital camera and I always use the manual setting unless I use the AV. Most of my learning has been absorbed by reading and just going out and experimenting in taking hundreds of photos. This book however filled in all the grey areas and then some. If I had read this book first, my learning would have trebled in no time. It covers the material in a logical sequence, with may photo examples of results using all aspects of light. I would highly recommend this book to beginners and also to any intermediate/advanced photographers as a refresher. Great book. A+++++++ 9/10.

Despite this book's rather advanced topics, it is perfect for beginners wanting to learn more. But don't worry, advanced users will learn plenty as well. This book is well worth every penny, and will pay for itself once you see the amazing pictures you have taken.5/5

This is another great book of Al's. He does a wonderful job at explaining all the needed information to better understand photography. Very easy to understand and lots of pointers. I recommend this book as a great read.

Some of the information was okay. But it seemed like it was just copied from the internet (poorly reworded wikipedia info). Most of the pictures weren't taken by the author but lifted from various web sites with a creative commons attribution. A few photographs were taken by the author, but that seemed the exception to the rule. The author lost almost all credibility when talking about bokeh: "Basically it is the esthetic quality of the blurred background. If a lens has a good bokeh it means that the blurred background is very even in color distribution. A poor bokeh on the other hand is very splotchy." Then to illustrate his point, he takes his own image of a Native American dancer with a distracting background, removes the background with Photoshop, and replaces it with a brown gradient, then says: "(I got) the result I was looking for."The author obviously has little experience with different cameras. He references the settings "Av" for aperture value mode, and "Tv" for time value mode which are Canon specific. Nikon, Sony, and Olympus all use "A" and "S" respectively. This book is obviously directed at beginners; they may not own a Canon. Also, this demonstrates the limited perspective the author has with a variety of photographic tools. In the end, there is some good stuff in the book. But there is enough confusing, and poorly written material that nascent photographers should consider seeking information elsewhere. The photograph of the Gossen light meter still had the bhphoto.com watermark on it.

I've bought myself a very good camera because a normal camera just doesn't do it when it comes to bird photography (esp. when you want to take photos of them while they fly). I am quite good at taking bird photos but there were many things about photography that always puzzled and intimidated me. I simply didn't want to get into the details because I was worried I'd never understand them. A few days ago, when there was a super moon, I wanted to get photos of it but every single time, the moon was just a white blob on the photo. So I started playing around with the MANY settings of my camera and by trial and error got the right settings to get good photos. I then realized, I needed to learn more about taking photos. I needed to know what those settings are and what things like Av and Tv mean.I then found this little eBook and have to say many things are so much clearer to me now. There are still many things I do not understand because even though the author said his book would be easy to understand, it wasn't in some parts. Some parts were just formulas and mathematical talk - I didn't get it. Apart from that, the book was extremely helpful and a good starting point!
