Get your kicks, and everything else pertaining to the Main Street of America, from this all-encompassing reference book on Route 66.A reference book with a twist, The Route 66 Encyclopedia presents alphabetical entries on Route 66 history, landmarks, personalities, and culture, from Bobby Troup's anthem "Route 66" to Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath to the Wigwam Motel. It's illustrated with more than 1,000 old and new, color and black and white photographs and pieces of memorabilia. You'll learn about Jack Rittenhouse and Will Rogers, as well as the contributions of lesser-known figures like Arthur Nelson and Angel Delgadillo. With references to the old (including the history of the U Drop Inn Cafe in Texas) and new (including a section about the recent Cars movie), The Route 66 Encyclopedia provides a sweeping look at a highway that has become more than just a road. These pages cover the history of Route 66 and the people who played a role in its transformation from highway to icon between 1926 and the present, but like the highway itself, this work does not fit within the traditional confines of generalities or terminology. Yes, this is an encyclopedia, a reference book for all things Route 66. However, it is also a time capsule, a travel guide, a history book, a memorial, a testimonial, and a chronicle of nearly a century of social change and evolution.

As someone who is planning a trip along as much as old Route 66 as possible, this book is invaluable in my planning and working out what I want to see and where. The combination of pictures, history of each site and what each place is like etc, are fabulous.

To us in New Zealand, Route 66 is an iconuc US highway. I bought this book as a gift for a friend who has travelled this route, and he was well pleased with it. The pictures are especially great. Thanks,George LustyHamiltonNew Zealand

TO SAY PUTTING THIS BOOK TOGETHER WAS a massive-undertaking would be putting it mildly ! This is one of the most-comprehensive ways to learn about the Route, its origins, the places along this storied Highway, those who've pioneered the preservation of the Mother Road, and, the history of all of the those towns, states, and places connected to it.This is a true encyclopedia: Its subject matter is taken section-to-section from "A to Z", just like the name "encyclopedia" implies, and once you start reading it, it's very hard to put down ! The information contained within this Hardcover book's 288 Pages - with over a 1,000 various images, including 361 Colour & 225 B/W Photos, and a fantastic, memorabila-loaded, full-colour fold-out-map in the front of the book - is almost spellbinding !I have traveled Route 66 a number of times, before it became the Landmark that it is. No, it wasn't "historic" then...it was how I got from Point A to Point B. It was the Main Road you took to get from Chicago-to-Santa Monica, or anywhere in-between. Period. BUT, the information I learned here in Jim's book filled me in, and added to the depth of my knowledge about a lot of those people & places connected with the Mother Road that I didn't know at the time. Can't tell you how much you'll truly learn on each page of this wonderful book !The painstaking amount of time and meticulous research done on this volume shows on every page from cover-to-cover. It's a book that you will keep close-by and come back to look at & learn from over-and-over. Great "Time Travel" methodology anytime you want it, and a "keeper" for sure !NOTE: As an added feature, check-out the bottom of the Back Cover of the book for information on how to obtain real-time updates for many of the sites & attractions on Route 66 that are mentioned in the book from Jim Hinckley's website.

This is more of a "Coffee Table" book than a "Take Along" book especially if you are travelling Route 66 on a motorcycle. If you are driving a car and you have a 2nd person as a "navigator" who can help you find information as you go, this book would be ideal to have on the seat beside you.I traveled Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica last summer by motorcycle and discovered a number of places/things I wanted to see had either gone out of existence or burned down or the collection of artifacts had been sold or moved, etc., between the time my reference books had been published and the Summer of 2013. This book is current as of 2011. It does contain much information about the History of 66 which gives the reader a much better understanding of what happened on (and what happened to) the places and people associated with this historic highway. It also contains much information about present day 66. Since I will be travelling from East to West on 66 again during Summer 2014, I would have preferred the Encyclopedia to be laid out that way; starting with Illinois and ending in California.

A great Route 66 reference book! Originally I checked this out at my local library but soon found that I had to own a copy. This book is chocked full of great little-known "Mother Road" information. Makes for a fun reference book to pick up and read a few pages at a time. Someday I hope to drive the route 66 from Chicago to LA -- and this book will be my trusty companion to help make sure I see many of the off-the-beaten path things to be seen along the way!

Very comprehensive encyclopedia of Route 66. We just finished our East to West trip 2 weeks ago. We had lots of maps and other guides but decided to also take this one since it is alphabetical. That ended up being really handy in looking up things by the city name. Address for various attractions are not usually given so you will need other sources. I got the hardback and I think it was worth the extra cost. I read all the reviews here before making the purchase and would urge Route 66 travelers to read them. It is hard to find AND to stay on Rte 66 in every state, except maybe Kansas. We used the Jerry McClanahan EZ 66 Guide every day. We used the set of Here It Is maps some, Visitors bureaus usually have good up to date info you can pick up on the road.to supplement your array of 66 info. We posted photos etc onto a FaceBook page that is still up should you care to go to Buzzards on Rte 66. Happy trails!

This is a great book with insight into Route 66 today and the history of this great road. If you are looking for a guide as you ride the road this isn't it. It isn't organized in travel sequence but in alphabetically. If you are looking for a book to enjoy and perhaps pick those sights that you want to be sure to make stops on you trip this is it.A great book about a great road. Todd and Buz would be proud
