This was a helpful book, and I liked the small size. It's difficult to figure out the correct way to pronounce the words. The "cheater" pronunciations need help. A German/English speaker was helping me with the language, and there were times that she told me the pronunciation in the book was wrong, or at the very best misleading. Otherwise, it did have a nice section on the food, transportation, and funny things like slang words. If you already have an idea of how to pronounce German words, you'll love this book.
We purchased the book to help a friend learn some German so as to be able to talk with her German-speaking granddaughter. While Steve's book is mainly for the adult traveler, it served as a starting point for conversations between our friend and my wife, who is a native German speaker. There may be better books aimed for those who need a general introduction to the German language.
I needed a quick and easy reference to use while in Berlin for a few days. There was quite a bit more English spoken than I expected, but the times I did use the book for reading and speaking it was perfect. For the price, and the security of being able to communicate quickly, it was well with the price!
I peeked at the book out of curiosity. It is full of German misspellings and mistakes. As a Professor of German I cannot recommend it. Rick Steves knows a lot about travel, but little about the German language.
Nice pocket sized book for travelling in German speaking countries. Don't anticipate much usage while travelling since just about everyone speaks English now, but nice to familiarize yourself with phrases before you go.
This little booklet desperately needs an index. It also needs to be pared down even more and the most essential and needful phrases and words included in a revamp.
It's a wonderfully made book but Rick Steve's left out the definite articles so some of the words don't have the specific gender associated with it. I was hoping there would have been der, die, und das in da. It's pretty good though.
Has tons of great info - but you can find many of the same items online or though other free resources. Still this is organized very nicely and is very handy when you are without internet service.
