I was going to Morocco on a group tour, so I wasn't looking for a guidebook that had a lot of info on restaurants and lodging but rather more history and info on the location. This book was perfect! There was some lodging/shopping/etc. info in the back of the book, but the guide itself focused more on history and experiences in each city. The book was very logically organized and easy to follow. My favorite part was the inclusion of walking tours and maps that were included for each city that were all reasonable distances and hit the highlights of each city...I followed many of these during my trip. Pictures were gorgeous as well. This book is much like the format for the DK series of guidebooks but I found this one even a bit more easy to use and again, really liked the walking tours and additional detail on certain experiences in a city/region (i.e., visiting tanneries in Fes or how to haggle in the souks). I will definitely use National Geographic Guidebooks again!
First review, but I"m annoyed enough with the book, namely the maps that I feel inclined to write a review. Planning a 2 week trip to Morocco in the spring, and I plan on traveling throughout the country. While the information is pretty detailed for each of the destinations, it's very frustrating that the destinations aren't listed or included on the Northern/Southern maps. I find that I'm constantly plugging in things online to map out the itinerary. Erg Chebbi or Merzouga, which is definitely up there in Top 10 experiences in Morocco aren't on the primary maps.
This Morocco travel guide is filled with beautiful images of Morocco. However, it was the most useless travel guide. I traveled with a companion through Morocco. This book had hardly any information on hotels and absolutely no information on hostels. It also lacked important travel information such as maps, places to eat, modes of transportation etc. This travel guide is aimed for travelers who have higher incomes than most. There are planned itinieries and walking routes. If you are traveling on a budget to Morocco, I highly don't suggest this book. My travel companion had the Lonely Planet Guide to Morocco. I found that book had more useful information than this National Geographic Traveler. This travel guide is more suited for a coffee table than for actual travel.
This book provides you with basic information to get in and around Morocco. I wouldn't say it does a great job giving you an in depth peak inside the country, in fact (like many guide books) it can romanticize a place rather than give an accurate account, but it provided me with helpful tips to plan my vacation.
Leaving for Morocco to take friends for a birthday and this book has been an ideal helpmate to guide those who have never been to the lovely Morocco, and simply perfect for those who want reminders of the best to see and do, all in a well-organized guide with the sites to see, the places to stay and the good restaurants to enjoy the exquisite cuisine of Morocco. (I love the suggestions with comments from National Geographic writers recommending their favorite things to do, or things that should not be missed). Going to Morocco? Buy this guide. You won't regret it.
Great book to get information about what you are going to see and experience if/when traveling in Morocco. Also useful after returning so you can reconstruct the places you have visited (and forgotten some details already).
