We are new kayakers, in our fifties, and have our own kayaks. We read this book cover to cover before setting out on our first expedition. The book not only details each trip with clear maps, but also tells you when to launch according to the tides, what to look for in weather reports, parking and prices, and clear maps. Since we are new, this information made us feel prepared and safe. The authors' natural history and beautifully illustrated birds and marine life helped us identify what we were seeing. Our first trip to Barnstable Harbor was a delight! We knew when and where to put in and how long a trip it would be. We tasted Sea Pickle, walked on the dunes and were prepared to watch out for motor boats. We identified egrets and saw a great blue heron. This is a great guide, not only for paddling, but as a nature guide as well. We keep it in our waterproof bag with the binoculars they recommend having on board. It also has a wonderful resource appendix for shopping or getting more information. This book is worth the low cost investment.
Those of us who live near Cape Cod avoid Cape Cod during tourist season. Traffic, strip malls, and endless suburban sprall with "ticky tacky" cottages have taken over too much of what used to be! But . . With a little perseverance, a guide book like this, and some creative drive-time planning, a person can still find what Thoreau wrote about and what Patti Page sang about! Keep your huge McMansions and aircraft carrier-sized internal combustion launches! A quiet little kayak on a Cape bay or estuary rekindles the charm hidden amidst the carnage and glitz! This is a treasure map for those who seek the flowers among the garbage!!
We bought this book for our first outing with Kayaks on Cape Cod. It is well written and has enough information, maps and descriptions to prepare each tour. It provides some background information for the area, and also covers the basics for safety, gear and other useful tips to ensure an enjoyable time on the streams, ponds and bays of Cape Cod.
Wonderful guide with clear maps, launch sites, advice regarding launch times, cautions as well as brief but informative narratives for each paddle. Well worth having in your library if you live in the area or plan to spend an extended vacation on the Cape. Most paddles are between 2 and 4 hours long and can easily be modified to meet your aims. Highly recommend this book.
This book was recommended to us when we bought our kayaks. We are new to the sport and this book is very informative. I also got one for my Dad who just got a canoe for Christmas!
This book contains all the classic kayaking spots on Cape Cod. It shows the put-in locations and the routes as well as information about wildlife you may encounter. Very useful.
Great information of many kayak launch areas, tides, etc. Very helpful.
good book with easy to follow directions.
