My family is working our way through the Muppets feature films, so while we've been immersed in Jim Henson's world, I checked out several Henson-related books at the local library, including this "It's Not Easy Being Green," not specifically aware of what it was. I had hoped that it might offer some interesting insight into the life of Henson or the history of the Muppets, but it was something quite different, and in my estimation, quite lesser than those alternatives."It's Not Easy Being Green" is a small bookette with less than 150 quotes from Jim Henson or about Jim Henson, related to things like art and creativity and friendship and collaboration and childhood, organized and grouped into five broad chapters around some of these primary themes. The entire book could be read in less than an hour, including the several pages of biography and several more pages of description about the production of the book.My primary disappointment is simply how little content there was. Most of the quotes were no more than a few sentences or were simply the lyrics of songs that appeared in the Muppets or Fraggle Rock or a few other lesser known Henson productions. And I'm sorry to say that it was decidedly less profound and memorable than I had hoped it would be. I don't doubt that Henson was a deep thinker and a creative genius of the highest order. In fact, that's why I'm encouraging my children to experience his work and why I wanted to read this book. But I just don't think this collection demonstrates to any meaningful degree the depth and breadth of Henson's unique contributions to the world.As a bathroom book to offer a few light bites of Kermit-infused inspiration, this book is just fine, and, for such a purpose, I happily recommend it.
