Before returning to the East Coast, Neil spends the night with his close friends, Thad and Ginny, at their home in Eugene, Oregon. After dinner, during a departure ritual for Neil, the two men eat magical mushrooms that they harvested months ago for this very occasion. When the shrooms begin to take effect, they join Ginny in the front room, turn on a reel to reel tape recorder and proceed to document their journey. "It's the performance in the moment," insists Thad. "I mean we're performing the reality that we're feeling." And so, in the Quiet Gardens, they do just that.

Quiet Gardens -one act play- by William ClaassenI can visualize Rod Serling describing the place where Quiet Gardens opens. He might end with, Is it the effect of the Mushrooms or is it the Twilight Zone? It might also be compared to The Odd Couple if Felix got remarried and had Oscar over to meet his wife. Another way I see this one act working is with Dr Who saving the world from the influences of the wrong mushrooms. Three characters, two males and one female, a husband and wife with his male friend visiting them in their two bedroom cottage.William Claassen sets the opening scene with a detailed description of what the audience sees and an idea of how the characters might behave when under the influence of magical mushrooms. The communication between two guys high on mushrooms and a female observer who may be testing their mental state by simply being coherent. This one act play would seem best suited for a college drama class learning techniques of being able to perform while understanding the thoughts and words of two characters drunk on mushrooms. Quiet Gardens is a simple read with a hidden meaning. It may be the basic understanding of two's company but which two?
