I was looking more for advice on getting from a major with no clear career applications(ie. not doctor, lawyer or teacher) to a career that I would be able to live with and perhaps enjoy. This guide helps you more if you have a pretty clear idea what you want to do and are ready to make a full time job of finding your career, especially if you are not willing to settle for "paying the bills" or "get out of the parents' house". For those of you lucky enough to have not picked a major yet, just remember that picking a major needs to corrolate to getting a job, not just "learning stuff". For everyone else, if you have a dream, seems like this book will help you get there. If you don't yet have a dream, I would strongly suggest tackling that area first. This book mainly just suggests getting a career profile(which is more of other people telling you what you should do, instead of you finding out what you want to do). There's a lot of really helpful and very current information in here. You have to be ready to jump on it though.
This book is a great complement to my book "The Secret To Getting A Job After College". While I cover the details about resumes and cover letters, this book does a very effective job addressing issues related to determining what you should think about doing after college and the author also has a valuable section on how to prepare your elevator speech. I recommend it for everyone who is in college or has graduated in the past few years and I now consider it required reading for many of my students.
This book is unrealistic. It has good advice, but please take it with a grain of salt (or five). No one has time to do job prep every single day, like the author suggests at one point. And no one in their right mind is going to try to network at the gym, like (if I remember correctly) she also suggests. Good tips on how to look for jobs and make connections and keep your LinkedIn useful (if you're into that sort of thing). However, don't read this like a novel or it will make you want to punch a wall.
Good book found some new information and things I already knew. Made me feel better about not finding a job in my field. Also helped me with self esteem. A great read for someone who is down about job process. Also gave me ideas about different things to do to help with job process.
This book has actionable steps for the recent college graduate to take in order to find that elusive first job. What are you waiting for? Get out into the real world with this trusty book by your side and make magic happen!
As a Career Coach, I find this book to be a great resource for college students and recent grads who are interested in preparing for a rewarding career after graduation. Lindsey Pollack is both knowledgeable and encouraging, and presents multiple strategies for students to be career-ready in today's competitive job market. A few topics include interview preparation, networking, service events, and blogging. A great read for the millennial student or job seeker, regardless of whether they have identified their career path or not.
This is the most actionable career book I've ever read. I was initially hesitant to read it, because it's in a list format and I find books/writing in a list format sacrifice quality and depth of ideas for sheer quantity. This book is definitely not in that category: it is an in-depth examination that balances big ideas with small actions. Each item is organized under a broader theme, and the organization of the advice is fantastic. If you're young, ambitious and unsure about what your next steps are, pick this book up ASAP!For a great complement to this book, check out "The Start-up of You": http://smile..com/The-Start-up-You-Yourself-Transform/dp/0307888908/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1405453583&sr=8-1.
I purchased this book after Lindsey gave an eye-opening presentation at my school and I couldn't be happier with my decision. This is definitely a helpful book regardless of what stage you're at in your own career development. I really enjoyed the style and format of the book because it was easy and fun to read, but you could skip around or skim through each tip if it didn't apply to your own situation. As I prepare to graduate with my master's degree in the next few months, I've been finding myself struggling to make a decision whether I should pursue a career in the field I'm receiving my degree in, or pursue some alternate dreams I've had for quite some time. Lindsey's tips on getting rid of "shoulds" and exploring a passion, really spoke to me and my own circumstances and provided me with a sense of comfort that I really needed. If this particular section doesn't apply to you, then I'm sure the tips on internships, networking, resumes, cover letters, and interviews will.
