I have the Medicine at a Glance in this series and was excited to get the Vascular at a Glance as well. This book is much smaller than the Medicine at a Glance at around 150 pages. The book is divided into two sections. Part 1 is Vascular Principles which covers vascular anatomy and physiology, examination of the vascular system, history taking and also discusses various imaging methods, such as Angiography and Vascular ultrasounds.Part 2 is disease-specific topics such as aneurysms , peripheral vascular disease, vasculitis, etc.I do like the way the book is organized and the abbreviations in the front are handy, as this book uses abbreviations quite frequently. Since I am not yet well versed in vascular anatomy or its diseases, it helps me to understand what I am reading without having to go look that up. The diagrams and charts are indispensable and consolidate a lot of information, bringing it all together into a small amount of space giving me “At-a-Glance” the most important points about the subject at hand, which helps me to see the “whole picture” a lot faster than if I had read an entire book on the subject. My only complaint about the book is I feel some of the photo images are low-contrast making it hard to really see what is going on. For instance, for Trash foot on page 78, the image caption says: “Foot is viable but note skin discoloration” but I can’t really see the skin discoloration that well because of the picture quality, in opposition to the image next to it about Sunset foot, which is very clear. Despite that small flaw, the book is very interesting and I am happily learning about vascular diseases. It’s a great reference book, I am happy I have it.

The at a Glance collection is a UK based series of medical publications, directed basically at students of medicine and health professionals. At US $40-$50 per book, these are quite a bargain for medical publications. The approach is simple, the illustrations are basic, the font is contemporary, the layout is for the most part double paged per topic, and it is a very nice basic introduction to the subject. Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at a Glance presents conditions requiring surgical intervention or treatment which are typically the solution that patients wish to avoid. It is interesting that the independent specialty has been recognized in the UK only recently.Unlike more advanced surgical texts and those of years ago that weigh a ton, this publication is just about 8 1/2"x 11¨ and can be slipped into a computer case with a laptop in many cases. A companion website is available for additional materials including self testing. I would not say that this is the most comprehensive source of information on vascular and endovascular surgery, but it is as described, ¨at a Glance.¨ Part 1 presents vascular principles and Part 2 deals with disease-specific topics.

Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at a Glance is written for the specialist in vascular disorders. It is an efficient "summary" of the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.I'm not a medical specialist, although I have a layperson's interest and a connection with a medical unit that works closely with people that have lost kidney function due to diabetes, obesity, genetics, or a number of other reasons. The staff at this unit was very impressed with the book (as was I) as a rich source of information at your fingertips. For example, if a person or patient complains of Raynaud's disease, this book outlines the general diagnostic procedures for determining whether it is Raynaud's disease, or Raynaud's syndrome, or perhaps something else.It doesn't cover everything. You won't find treatment of burns, or snakebite (although frostbite is discussed). This is an excellent review book for the practitioner, but it is also a reference book for patients and their families. Seeing a diagram of how a fistula works is better than a simple verbal description, and this book is a rich visual reference.

Unlike many of their other textbooks, Wiley's VASCULAR AND ENDOVASCULAR SURGERY AT A GLANCE would be suitable for the layperson trying to educate themself --or at least suitable for the geekier of us.The book begins with an overview of the vascular system and then moves on to diseases and injury and what can be done about them. There is a little bit of technical language, but in general the information is very clear, with diagrams and sometimes photos which clarify even further.Since the sections are truly AT A GLANCE (short) this would make a fine addition to the home library. I've already used the diagrams of Venous and Arterial flow to answer a question my son had, and I have used the grim images in the section on Diabetes to good purpose to emphasize to my daughter that diabetes is not just a disease you treat with pills and shots. It can lead to serious complications.A good source if you want quick and concise information about a vascular problem.

This is a relatively thin paperback at 158 pages, with most of the left pages consisting entirely of illustrations, and text mostly on the right pages. The font size is rather small on the illustrations and the formatting could be improved (I expect better formatting from the famous publisher Wiley). The title including the words "surgery at a glance" is not a fitting description since there is little detail about surgical procedures. In many instances the description of the surgical treatment is only around 1 to 3 brief, general paragraphs. Instead, this book is a high level reference of various vascular conditions.Overall this is a good reference for the busy person to inspire an entry point to more thorough reading elsewhere -- but do not expect a whole lot of detail in this at-a-glance guide.
