I could not recommend this text higher. Worth every penny. Basic yet chock full of information. I am a new FNP working in family practice and in Public Health/Family Planning. As such I see a variety of patients and obviously many female patients in need of well-woman checks, contraception, STD testing and treatment, pre and post-natal care, etc. This text provides information on health promotion and management of a variety of healthcare issues. If you work in women's health in any way, I recommend you invest in this book. I also recommend you look into the following books. I have found them to be invaluable as well.Contraceptive TechnologyManaging Contraceptive Pill Patients 2010

If you have ever picked up a women's gynecology textbook before, read through some chapters and thought to yourself "but what does the WOMAN want?" or "was this written by some old dude who practiced medicine when contraception was still illegal?" or finally: "why is this textbook treating the uterus like it isn't even attached to a human being?" then you need to close that book now (better: glue pages together so nobody can ever read that androcentric dribble again) and pick up Schuiling and Likis' Women's Gynecologic Health. You will be a better provider (and let's face it: person) for it.This is an in depth look at women's gynecologic health through a feminist perspective. What does that mean? Basically it means working WITH women and not FOR them, throwing out power imbalances in health care interactions, treating women on an individual basis instead of using broad gender assumptions, and the rejection that menstruation, childbirth and menopause are pathologic processes. Awesome, am I right?Plus, really great chapters on sexuality, health care for lesbians (finally!), intimate partner violence and sexual assault, and female sexual dysfunction along with the normal gynecologic topics: contraception, breast conditions, infertility, unintended pregnancy, gynecologic infections, STI, menstrual cycle pain and discomforts, normal and abnormal uterine bleeding, hyperandrogenic disorders, benign gynecologic conditions, gynecologic cancers, urinary incontinence, and chronic pelvic pain. Not only will this book help you become an awesome provider and much sought after dinner companion (this has worked for me. My friends love having me over for dinner to ask my advice on their menstrual cycle/birth control/sex lives), but it will also reaffirm you decision to work with women. Huzzah!

I ordered this book for my Women's Health class, opened it to the first chapter and knew this book was a goldmine. It is, most importantly, an excellent tool to help the new or experienced healthcare provider assess, discuss and treat the most common conditions affecting women's health. Each condition is explained physiologically, steps for health assessment are provided and both well-known and upcoming treatment methods are discussed. It is, therefore, a great book to learn on and an equally great tool to continually reference when providing care. What makes the book stand out, however, are the deliberate lengths the authors went to to provide culturally sensitive, empowering and thoughtful care to each individual woman. Special chapters and sections discuss care for adolescent, menopausal, minority, lesbian/bisexual/transgender and other groups that are too often marginalized in the healthcare system. The book discusses how to provide open, honest care for women at all stages in life through an open dialogue. It is hard to say all the ways in which this book has made me a better, more thoughtful and better informed provider, but it is safe to say that this text will never be far from my side.

Poorly organized and difficult to follow. Also, all in text diagrams are in black and white, and some are very small. The book does have a "color block" of diagrams that are in color print, however this is inconvenient and adds the already daunting study times (by having to look up what the text is referring to).

No pictures. Just lots and lots of words. This was a required text for school but I disliked it so much I gave it away....I'm 2 years out of NP school and I haven't missed it for one day. If you're ok with no pictures then this is ok because it does have lots of information.

This was a required book for my MSN/WHNP degree and it was one of the most helpful books for me during the program and I still use it as a new NP as a quick reference. It gives a thorough explanation of various women's health issues without going so in-depth and complex that it loses your interest. The book also arrived on time and in good condition. Would buy from this seller again.

I found this to be a great book! I provide the O-Shot and I wanted to have a good gynecological reference text for my practice.I needed a reference to refer to for certain gynecological conditions and study. This book is great for those of you who do not have much gynecological experience like myself but want to brush up on certain conditions and treatments. It is also a great book, in my opinion, for gynecologist to have an easy to read and follow reference book for information on many of the gynecological conditions and treatments.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good reference source in gynecology. Thanks to the authors for putting such a good review text together, & I am sure I will use it often. I have already used it to start to educate my staff!
