Hoshino's Alaska

Michio Hoshino traveled from his native Japan to Alaska in 1972 for what was to be a two-week trip. Enchanted, he stayed for three months, then returned to live there in 1978, undertaking a lifelong career as a naturalist and photographer driven by a deep commitment to and curiosity about the region. Killed by a bear while traveling in Russia in 1996, he is still widely regarded as the preeminent photographer of the Alaskan wilderness for his breathtakingly beautiful photographs, at once majestic and intimate. Hoshino's Alaska celebrates his life and work by collecting nearly 150 of his best images, along with insightful excerpts from his writings, and essays by his close friend and translator Karen Colligan-Taylor and by author and photographer Lynn Schooler revealing both the heart of Alaska and of the man behind the lens.

The photos are stunning and it is so nice to read some of the personal entries of this humble, wise, insightful man. For me, to look at these pictures changes something in me, to see through his eyes, and stand where he stood, how magical!! Thank you.

After reading Blue Bear by Lynn Schooler, I had to see some of Michio's photographs. I was not disappointed - lovely book.

Briefly, the photography is beyond breathtaking. The only problem is the editing of the book. I know a picture is worth a thousand words... but a slightly more descriptive approach would be more endearing to the reader/observer, after all, both processes are required to ingest this beautiful work. Every so often I return to this book and observe some little item that I overlooked the previous time. I think I will continue to do this for years to come.

Michio Hoshino is an amazing photographer. He captures something beyond the visual beauty of his subjects. This book is a great way to meet him and his work.

This was a special man. Photos are wonderful and inspire a true appreciation for the world as it evolved.
