This book is decent.Pros: good systematic method of approaching the encounters. Mnemonics are easy to remember and make sense. The strategies it continually goes over do come together to make a sound cohesive method to the encounter. The humanistic domain & history taking chapters are solid. The complaints in the simulated cases are a lot of 'most commons' and probably more likely to show up on your PE. The cases include a blank soap note so you can practice writing them out.Cons: I expected some OMM suggestions for complaints and there are none. I figured that if the book is aimed at the osteopathic exam then it would have a little more osteopathic emphasis. Not much in the simulated cases as far as ideas for differential/plan.I think the First Aid book is better - includes differentials and plans/workup on top of what this book offers. Use Savarese and/or Nicholas & Nicholas for the Osteopathic stuff.

Awesome book. I read this book in its entirety on the plane to Conshohocken, PA for my COMLEX PE. It had everything I needed (besides a few pertinent osteopathic treatments I reviewed from another book). I passed and it was the main resource I used!

I used this to prep for PE in June 2013 - I hear SOAP notes have changed from handwritten to typed, but I believe this will still be very helpful.Plenty of tips for patient interactions, organized history taking and development of differential diagnosis, algorithms for writing SOAP note as well as plenty of cases to review - works best to review with another person.

Considering that there are not a lot of other options (if any) for studying for the PE this book is worth a look. It does a good job of going over the basics of the test and helping one to feel prepared. Case studies at the end are a great plus.

For those of you who wonder how they grade test takers, this book has it. This test is a big waste of money and time. It's just another way to for the AOA to make $$$, but you have to pass it anyway. When I was a student, I had no idea what criteria they used to pass students. This book has it. You will not find the criteria online. Instead, you always hear vague "criteria" on what people think they did to pass. Just buy this book. You'll wont regret. I had the mistake of relying on the USMLE CS and that didn't help for COMLEX PE.

Needs to be supplemented with First Aid USMLE-CS book. This book is absolutely necessary to get all the dumb things NBOME wants you to, but there are only conplete SOAP notes for the first 2 out of 50.

On par with what several other reviewers stated, I flipped through this book a couple of days prior to my arrival in Philly (mainly on the flight up there). I did not spend a whole lot of time on the cases themselves. However the preparatory information was great and I believe this book did a wonderful job in outlining the requirementsfor the physical exam. These suggestions and tips truly were helpful and made the PE much smoother experience. Despite this book shortcomings, I highly recommend it! And I wish you future DO's "good luck"

Very wordy, boring to read, too detailed, and not very helpful to say the least. Includes SOAP notes for only first two cases - and these notes are also too detailed for any student to be able to finish a soap note in 9 minutes. If you follow all the nitty gritty details on this book, you will never finish your PE encounter on time. I'm glad I got a copy of FA.
