This book is good for the theater student and costume design and someone who aspires to being a costume designer for the theater. It's a lot different and it's not not like making your own clothes but it's for the characters in the play and a good job if your talented and love theater.
I worked this past semester in a professional costume shop as part of a costuming course. This was the required book. Our instructor was often correcting the text or telling us to ignore it because they book did not conform with industry standards. She has worked in several shops across the U.S. and this was not accurate in some places given her experience.My personal complaint is that this book doesn't give a clear illustration of how to execute stitches. I would have liked more detailed instructions. It does provide spaces to attach samples, which is probably the most useful element. It also is fairly comprehensive in stitches and finishes.
Some of the instructions weren't as clear as I'd have liked. Our instructor had us go by the book as much as possible, but some things weren't perfect. All in all, still an excellent resource. Some friends are chatting about the a photo of some pleating on a dress as shown in this book, and that was one thing we had to do. Not easy, but it was one thing I had never done before and now know how to do because of that class and this book.
It's a good reference book. Some of the pictures make the techniques hard to pick up without the help of an experienced sewer. However, I do like the explanations of what each seam, finishing, stitch is used for. There are a few simple patterns included in the back for people to learn basic drafting techniques.
The diagrams can be a bit confusing, and the binder arrived with a ring that is partially bent and won't close. However, the book has good basic information for teaching beginning sewing.
The book has excellent illustrations, and easy to understand directions. It was just what I needed. A great book for beginners.
I bought this for a class that my husband and I are taking at our local college ASU this fall. It looks to be a very informative book and I am sure we will get a lot of use out of it.
Great reference book if you already know the basics but upon use for the classroom we discovered a lot of careless errors.
