Do your actors and your production a favor and get some advice from a pro unless you have extensive experience with working with a professional director. Love that it has lots of exercises to demonstrate some of the principles it teaches. Deals more with technical issues of directing, rather than character development and script analysis. I have to admit, I liked the fact that the author recommended a lot of things that I was already doing!
I got this as a gift for a young associate. Too often directing is taught as a touchy feely art, but this book provides a sound foundation for the directorial craft, covering everything from blocking, internal meter and rhythm, to composition, to character development and structure. A detailed "how to" that should be required for every young director.
Book was recommended by William Ball author of "A Sense of Direction" specifically to read chapters 7 & 8 on picturization and movement. Excellent source for more advance directing. For those interested in getting into directing I highly recommend "A Sense of Direction" Break A Leg. Jose

I purchased this book as a filmmaker to learn more structure. It is well worth it.
