Learn the strategy and philosophy of China's greatest military theorist with this highly readable and informative edition of The Art of War.The Art of War by Sun Tzu is the best known and most highly regarded book on martial strategy ever written. Although its wisdom is from ancient China, its principles and advice are timeless—as applicable to the boardroom as they are to the battlefield.Unlike contemporary translations that have focused too heavily on applying this military classic to corporate conflicts, this definitive interpretation maintains the impact of the original. Written for martial artists by a martial artist, it is free of academic commentary and ambiguous metaphors, as Hanshi Kaufman uses straightforward prose to explain Sun Tzu's message. Like the original, this new interpretation is divided into thirteen sections, each presenting vital information on military strategy ranging from assessing opposing armies and the proper treatment of troops tot he use of spies. Author Hanshi Stephen Kaufman is widely acknowledged as the "Founding Father" of American Karate and his interpretation of this classic work is specifically intended for practicing martial artists and warriors. Kaufman packs the power of Sun Tzu's original text into a straightforward narrative without the jargon or artifice of all the more academic versions of this ancient work.

Like the title of the book says, it's an interpretation, which is simply a summary of someone's understanding of the book, not the book itself. If you've read a decent translation of the Art of War, this might be worth looking into in order to get someone else's opinion on such an old text, but if you haven't, get a translation first. This will only confuse you otherwise. The reason I changed my rating to two stars is because I think that Stephen should make a point in the beginning on the difference between an interpretation and a translation, so people really know what they're getting. If you are looking to get your hands on a translation of the Art of War, go for Lionel Giles translation. The two things that really make it great are the fact that it contains two sections(one with and one without commentary), and the translations themselves seem to be very well preserved.

Being familiar with Kaufman's presentation of the Book of five Rings available from the same publisher this version of Sun Tzu is a good English language translation. Keep in mind that Kaufman offers these works from a decidedly modern perspective and in an extremely pragmatic fashion. Devoid of footnotes and references save for the brief prefaces Mr. Kaufman provides them as serious study guides nonetheless. Highly recommended Reading for strategy enthusiasts.

I have read a translation of the art of war in the past by another author and found this version relatively easy to read. It is an interpretation written by a martial artist with over 60 years experience . It is basically a book discussing war strategy and may only interest those with those interest in mind. I found it easy to read and follow. I think most of us, involved with martial arts, will read atleast one of the many interpretations of " Sun Tzu 's Art of War " at some point in our journey. This version would be a good one to read ( since it is written by a martial artist) than many of the others.

im a self trained martial artist, I study wing chun, jeet kune do, muay thai, taekwondo, judo, boxing, and Japanese sword fighting, as well as the art of concealment and so on.. this book gives you a great perspective on life in the modern world such as work strategy, dealing with every day problems as well as martial arts strategy and ofcourse a way to approach any conflict. read this book its better than any self help book I believe

In this book I liked how Steven Kaufman left out all the commentary. He left it up to the reader to interpret what Sun Tzu was writing. The book follows a very detailed look into the mind of a commander of war. This book would be great for anyone who commands troops or even a business owner. Although I wouldn't use every tactic mentioned, I did find much of the information useful. This will definitely be a book I pick up once a year and read. There is so much to learn that it takes more than one reading to absorb it. I would definitely recommend The Art of War, by Stephen F. Kaufman, for anyone looking to up there leadership game. This can also be used as a personal development book for that person who is interested in pushing themselves to a new level in life.

A solid interpretation of a book that has been both interpreted and translated many times. Kaufman takes a very straight forward stance in the interpretation of the classic book and chooses language which highlights simplicity. I would not want this to be my only version of "The Art of War" but it makes a fantastic alternative/varied approach to Sun Tzu's writing. Worth the purchase.

I have not finished reading Hanshi Kaufman's version of this. However, and so far, this is an easy read of a text that has just not military implications, but implications for life and martial arts as well. I recommend this book so far as it is a great interpretation of Sun Tzu's art. Nowadays, we still have to acknowledge the fact that we are at war, whether with ourselves or with others.

I have a lot different versions and this one clears the smoke from the poetic nature of the others. It is straight forward and well written. Five Rings and this book are (how to) manuels for coping with competition and people.A must read to further the understanding of Sun's work.
