The Stories They Tell: Artifacts From The National September 11 Memorial Museum

This poignant selection of artifacts—and their stories—from September 11 provides an official, lasting record of that day’s experience. In both text and photography, the story of September 11 is told through a selection of powerfully moving artifacts from the 9/11 museum’s collection that serve as touchstones to the day and its aftermath. From crushed FDNY trucks to the steel that was pierced as planes struck the Twin Towers, from victims’ property pulled from the wreckage and returned to families (who later donated the property to the museum) to spontaneous memorials collected from around Ground Zero, the array of objects tell complex and often surprising stories. Poignant artifacts as monumental as the Vesey Street staircase—which offered an escape for thousands fleeing the towers—and as intimate as a loved one’s wedding band or last recorded phone message are selected to illuminate people’s experiences during and after September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993. The mission of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum is to bear solemn witness to the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center. The museum honors the nearly 3,000 victims of these attacks and all those who risked their lives to save others. It further recognizes the thousands who survived and all who demonstrated extraordinary compassion in the aftermath.

A really well put together Memorial from that awful day. The pictures will tug at your heart and some are hard to look at....but the stories behind them will stay with you and you feel as if you know some of those that were lost or who lost someone a little bit better.

I am very disappointed. There are very few recovered items shown in the book. Yes, there is a synopsis of 9/11 but you can get a better in-depth overview in other books. I wanted a book showing the items recovered and their stories and it sadly falls short.

I ordered this book because I am interested in how the 9/11 museum will look. This book just touches the smallest part of the museum, but what wonderful stories it tells. I hope that once the museum opens they will offer additional stories of artifacts.

I had hoped there would be more coverage about the personal items that were found and saved at the Land Fill.

I am looking forward to new museum opening up in 2014. Decided to buy this to see what some of the artifacts are going to be displayed. It was a really good book and gave the background story of each item. Does show every item that will be displayed.

I regretted. It purchasing this book at the 9/11 memorial museum and was so glad to find it on . This book is informative, has beautiful photos, and provides tons of detail about everything to do with 9/11. It's a series of essays on different topics (archeology, remembrance, etc) so you can read through, page by page, like a regular book, or you can flip through and read any random page you want. A lovely book overall.

A great book about some of the stories related to the artifacts in the 9/11 Museum. The pictures are all really lovely.

great book, a different view of 9/11, very refreshing at times. A tasteful look at those little-known miracles and reminders strength under the worst circumstances
