Easy-to-apply set of principles for selecting the right antibioticAntibiotic Basics for Clinicians, Second Edition, shows you how to apply your knowledge of pharmacology and microbiology in order to select the appropriate antibiotic.  Rather than rely on rote memorization, you’ll learn the underlying rationale for treatment of common infectious diseases and pathogens. The text focuses on antibacterial agents, examining individual antibiotics and antibiotic classes as well as definitive and empiric therapies—providing a framework for prescription and clinical preparation for students training to be physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacologists, or medical technologists. Clinicians also rely on Antibiotic Basics for quick reference or review. The Second Edition includes current research and new approaches to emerging resistant organisms such as community-acquired, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing bacteria.  In addition, the book has been updated to reflect changes in treatment guidelines, including new guidelines for Clostridium difficile colitis and urinary tract infections. Special features help you “think like a clinician”: Illustrations help you understand how antibiotics fight against bacterial infections. Mnemonics throughout the text make it easier to remember which antibiotics are prescribed for specific pathogens. Searchable online version of the text takes you to the content you need from any web-enabled device. Case studies demonstrate how the principles set forth in the text are applied in clinical practice. Questions and answers improve your ability to choose the right antibacterial agent. Appendices include dosing for adults and children, use of antibacterial agents in pregnancy, and treatment of bioterrorism agents.

Excellent information. I am a new nurse practitioner and did not get this info in NP school. Really explains bacterial biological processes and how antibiotics target them, then reviews various bacteria, followed by usual therapies for the most common disease states. It finishes up with clinical scenarios and review questions, as well as helpful tables. Loved it, and plan to periodically review it. I had a lot of "AHA" moments. What does this book lack? It should explain how to read a culture and sensitivity report, and the concept of minimum inhibitory concentration.

This is a nice little book, short, easy to read, but with a great deal of clinically useful information. Microbial flora differs between countries, as well as resistance patterns, but this is a general overview, and will be relevant almost everywhere. The only suggestions I have for the next edition is 1) I would have liked another chapter on drug interactions. A topic of increasing importance, and worth a more thorough discussion. 2) The book is confined to antibacterial agents, which is an understandable choice. However, covering antifungal agents would be a nice addition.

I had never felt confident in prescribing antibiotics with past education. One of the physicians I work with advised this book would be helpful. He was spot on. Great resource.

Antibiotic Basics for Clinicians reads fairly quickly with lots of pictures and tables. This book talks about organisms separately from the drugs and has great appendixes for dosing. The book needs to have a more detailed discussion of clinical uses, drug interactions, and resistance for each drug. I kind of wish my professor had chosen another book, but she said that there were not many books like this one on the market.

Super helpful resource as a new acute care NP. Antibiotics have not been my strongest area and this book breaks it down on a level that works well for me. I like how the author adds humor to keep me interested.

This book is excellent for those who either have no background with antibiotics or need a good review. The information is presented thoroughly and effectively. I would rate this book five starts and highly recommend it to everyone.

This book is the best, most clearly explained basic overview of antibiotics and their use I have come across. If you need a book that teaches the fundamentals such that they can be easily remembered, and built upon later, I highly recommend it.

Excellent resource for a basic understanding of antibiotics especially as a medical student who is not good at infectious disease. Gives a general idea and good foundation.
