This full-color atlas is intended to act as a supplement to introductory microbiology laboratory manuals. It is not designed to replace them, nor is it intended to replace actual performance of the techniques. Rather, the photographs are supplied to help with the interpretation of results. The third edition of the Photographic Atlas for the Microbiology Laboratory is one of the best selling microbiology books in the higher education market. The authors have built on the success of this book by making significant improvements for the new edition. Some of the changes for the fourth edition include: A new art program designed to increase student understanding of important concepts A new "Introduction" chapter provides context and background information for the new microbiology student Re-organized content to reflect the "process" a working microbiologist would follow to identify an unknown organism Three new chapters covering the three domains: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya New photographs, re-scanned and or re-imaged photos and new photomicrographs that match more closely what students are likely to observe in the laboratory A complete redesign that should allow the student to better access the materialThis atlas can accompany and augment any Microbiology textbook. It is designed to be of particular value to students in a laboratory situation and could either accompany a laboratory manual or, in certain courses, it could be used in conjunction with Exercises for the Microbiology Laboratory, Fourth Edition. to provide students with a full-color, affordably priced lab manual.

This atlas would be an excellent purchase for anyone interested in microbiology or for those students taking an introductory microbiology course (especially clinical/medical microbiology). The authors have included many common tests and stains performed in the laboratory, and contrary to what a previous reviewer has posted, this atlas contains many photographs that would be beneficial to those students having difficulty with bacterial identification in the lab. The authors have provided concise but relavent background information for all topics covered. There are only a few problems with the atlas. Aside from the fact that it is an unbound looseleaf package, for some the organization may leave something to be desired. Also, for those taking more advanced micro courses, the atlas may need to be supplemented with other material.

I am an undergrad nursing student, and I can attest that this book is a great companion to microbiology lab activities. You can look up the microorganism you are viewing under the scope and compare what you see to the image the book displays. This is very helpful in this respect. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I do not care for the way it is organized. Overall, however, I would highly recommend this atlas to any microbiology student.

I highly recommend that you don't spend the extra money on the photographic atlas if you have purchased the lab manual (Laboratory Theory and Applications) by the same authors. There is nothing special about it and it has all the same pictures that are in the lab manual.....If you don't plan on getting the lab manual then it is very interesting and I recommend it.

I found this book very helpful during the laboratory component of my microbiology class. Since I did not take them at the same time, it was helpful in reviewing information about certain organisms without having to dig through all my notes from the lecture portion. The pictures are also helpful in studying for exams where you actually need to look into a microscope and identify. I bought this unbound and stuck it in my lab binder.

"A Photographic Atlas for the Microbiology Laboratory" is an amazing tool to supplement studying Microbiology!!! I have been able to use this book to prepare me for upcoming lab testing in conjunction with the materials provided by my professor... I love the side by side comparisons of uninoculated tubes with the test tubes, and the graphs that accompany tests giving color indicator results!!! The full-color presentation is superb and easier to read than the printed tutorials I use in class. This is a MUST BUY for any student taking a Micro course!!! As long as you use it and you don't let it collect dust at the end of your desk, it is a GREAT BUY!!! I highly recommend this to anyone!!!!

Definitely a useful tool and a great photographic atlas for the microbiology student. I use mine quite a bit. I have no comparison to others, but this atlas has certainly fit my needs in my microbio classes!

I bought this as a first year medical student in hopes that it would simplify and better illustrate the complicated world of microbiology. In the end, it was a totally useless book. The pictures are average but really low yeild. If you are a med student trying to find pictures, I strongly reccomend you look elsewhere. If you are an undergrad and have tons of time on your hands, get it and waste a nice weekend or two. Otherwise stick to the assigned books. If you are a proffesor who has chosen this as an assigned book, shame on you!!!

This was shipped so fast! THANK you! Perfect condition and just as useful as the following edition that was 30 dollars more. What a great asset for the class, clear, concise, great images. Must have for Micro!
