First off, this review book does not follow DSM5. Being the 4th Edition, published in 2016, one would expect to find the latest and most updated psychiatric informations! Yet, Authors still place disorders of the childhood and adolescence in a separate chapter, despite the DSM5 being organized across lifespan. Chapter 5 from the 3rd Edition with MSE and mini-mental status assessment disappeared, and has been replaced by "Chapter 6: Advanced Health and Physical Health Assessment" that does not mention the MSE or Mini Mental Status! Chapter 7: "Pharmacological principles" needs serious updates. Authors place cerebellum in the brain stem... etc... For a book priced at $126.00, the authors can't still have it right. It is insulting for the buyer!

I agree with other reviews about some of the error in the manual. That being said this is the best manual on the market for PMHNP boards.I and many of my classmates used only this manual to study for the boards and passed it!

Other issues have been addressed by other reviews, so I'll jump to what stands out when you open this book: it's a series of bullet lists. It reads more like an outline than a book, with little or no explanation of complex ideas. Motivational interviewing, a useful skill, gets four bullet points while psychoanalysis gets three pages (also consisting of bullet points). The entire somatic nervous system is described in one sentence: "conveys information from the CNS to skeletal muscles; responsible for voluntary movement." It doesn't even mention the sensory function of the somatic nervous system... Apparently physical sensations like heat, cold, and pain are viewed as unimportant?Glial cells are described in a way neuroscience abandoned 20 years ago: "structures that form the myelin sheath around axons and provide protection and support." Granted, they include the word protection, so they're not entirely out of date, but glial cells are known to be involved in a wide range of processes and function along side neurons in both health and disease. Astrocytes (a type of glia) are involved in controlling blood flow in the brain and can communicate not only with each other but can cause neurons to fire (see "calcium waves").Maybe none of this is important for the exam, but the book would be a lot more helpful if the concepts were fleshed out to help with deep processing of the information. As it is, it feels like a labor in rote memorization, which is an inefficient method of learning an entire textbook.

I agree with other reviewers who found many errors in this review manual. Some of the errors are not likely to affect exam results (e.g. citation errors) but some are factually incorrect and could be misleading in preparation for the certification exam. When the price of a text is as high as it is for this book, one would expect more reliable factual and editorial review. What's worse is that I've written to ANCC several times about identified errors and have not received any replies -so disappointed!
