Introduction to Emergency Management, Fourth Edition, offers a practical guide to the discipline of emergency management. It focuses on the domestic emergency management system of the United States, highlighting the lessons and emerging trends that are applicable to emergency management systems in other parts of the world. The book begins by tracing the historical development of emergency management from the 1800s to the present world of homeland security. It then discusses the hazards faced by emergency management and the methods of assessing hazard risk; the function of mitigation and the strategies and programs emergency management or other disciplines use to reduce the impact of disasters; and emergency management preparedness. The book also covers the importance of communication in the emergency management of the twenty-first century; the functions and processes of disaster response; government and voluntary programs aimed at helping people and communities rebuild in the aftermath of a disaster; and international emergency management. It also addresses the impact of September 11, 2001 on traditional perceptions of emergency management; and emergency management in the post-9/11, post-Katrina environment. * Expanded coverage of risk management * Enhanced coverage of disaster communications, including social networking sites like Twitter * More material on mitigation of disasters * Up-to-date information on the role of FEMA in the Obama administration

I had to purchase this for a class. I didnt want to spend a fortune on a book that 1. I would never read again and 2. I would only need for a limited time and would make not much back on by reselling. I "rented" this on my kindle and it was one of the best purchases I have ever made. I used the book for the class, still had it for review if I needed it for my next class. Very VERY happy with the "rent" option with kindle and .

Looking for a detailed and complete overview of Emergency Management (in the USA), than this seems the book a must read. But it's more kind of a course than a book ... lot's of data, lists, ... But ideal to learn about this growing field.

I bought this book for a class and didn't end up using it much, but from what I did read I enjoyed. The book is full of useful information and anyone looking to learn about EM should definitely use this book.

Damon Cappola's Fourth Edition of his popular book on international crisis management includes case studies and useful updates on matters which college professors will find useful in transmitting the core elements of crisis management and the issued embedded therein for their students. Using a fairly comprehensive approach to a wide and complex array of subjects Capolla's book reflects the obvious and subtle dimensions of an inherently interdisciplinary and diplomatic jumble of coordination, planning, logistics, terrain and demographic assessment which iften characterize humanitarian interventions and the related set of problems in assessing any international crisis. While every such crisis has its political aspects, the book focuses on the context of international response, the UN role, the enormous challenges of establishing a coherent and effective command and control scheme and the actual execution of assistance in a failed or failing state. For students wishing to know more about the spectrum of issues involved this is a great introduction.

Easy and great read, the text is easy to understand, the case studies and critical thinking elements are relative and helped me understand Emergency Management even better. I really enjoyed the class because of this book.

It's so easy to order textbooks on , why do they even attempt to make you buy books at the book stores anymore? This book is really good for an into to emergency management. If you or someone you know is thinking of a career in EM or public safety, check this book out for concepts and typical employment situations. Other than that, it was shipped fast and arrived brand new. Thanks!

It's a textbook. It is fairly well written, and required for a course. Even though it's related to my major, it's not like I would go out of my way to read a book like this...very often. Okay, I'm a total nerd, and I like this book. The inner prepper in my went a little crazy when I got it, too.

While still much room for improvement this series makes a major contribution to the field of EM, a field that I view as largely on of Public Administration but with essential inputs from many other academic disciplines and almost all professions. Especially law and public health.
