I found this book to be extremely helpful in learning my way around my Canon SL-1 DSLR. I have had SLR cameras in the past, but when the digital point and shoot cameras came on the market, I moved in that direction. I currently own two P&S Nikons (Coolpix S8100 & SO1), which I will probably keep due to their size. I like the Canon SL-1 because of the size and quality. As usual, the User Manuals that come with cameras these days are OK to a degree, but you can't always get a lot of details with a manual on a computer. I find the "For Dummies" series to be very helpful, as they are usually written in an easy to understand format and cover about everything. I would highly recommend buying one for any camera you own that is "menu heavy" like the DSLR's are. It was a good investment.
The book is very easy to use and offers good information about the camera. it also offers suggestions - like getting a different camera strap than the one included and to carry an extra battery. It did go over some basic things that I didn't need - like how to put in a memory card for example - but some people may need those basic instructions. Recommend the book. It was helpful and worth the price.
Maybe I'm not the dummy I thought I was, so I didn't need all the stuff on how to be a better photographer. Still, this explained things in a far easier to understand manner than the owner's manual. The author uses a good dose of humor to get his points across and has a number of great tips, esp. for us old farts who are taking their first digital plunge. I do wish the section on how to use the digital darkroom programs was easier to understand.
Just got the camera and this book fills in the missing parts of the owners' manual. Would recommend to anyone starting of with this DSLR
I think that purchasing this book was one of the best buys that I have made. The Canon manual that comes with the SL1 is not as complete as this book. I'm a newbie when it comes to the various types of shooting priorities, and this book makes it easier to understand. I think its a good buy.
I've taken classes with a professional photographer to try and learn how to use my Rebel camera. I walked out of that class having learned that there was so much more I needed to learn...but not really knowing what to do with my camera. This book, has been SOOOOO helpful. I'm learning so much and enjoying my camera more than ever. I've taken some really great shots because of this book. I would recommend it to anyone!
While i consider myself well versed in the technical aspects of traditional film-based photography, i was behind the times in terms of digital imaging. I have had a digital point and shoot for a while, but decided to try a more serious camera from this century. Upon taking delivery of my new camera, i quickly realized i was woefully ignorant of many of its features. I did a little common sense based research, and decided to purchase this book as my starting point for getting myself up to speed. The book arrived quickly and in perfect "New" condition, and the contents of the book did not dissappoint. I would strongly urge anyone investing in this camera to make this additional purchase. Bigger type than the factory supplied owners manual, color photos instead of black and white, and longer sentences in clear simple language for almost all to understand. If you have no photographic background, some of the material might be a challenge for you, but then again, so will the camera itself. Work with this book, and you will get past that initial problem and eventually move on to making good solid photographs of a very high quality.
This book has been a great help to me. I have been taking photographs for a very long time but am new to having a high-quality DSLR and I am studying photography much more seriously than ever before. This book has helped me learn about the camera and about fundamental concepts and techniques in photography. My photos have greatly improved and my knowledge of this camera's features and what I can do with it has grown enormously.
