This is an excellent reference guide to the architecture of Golden Age Hollywood. The paper is quality -- glossy and heavy-weight -- and the color illustrations are superbly reproduced. It's lots of fun to look through, and what surprises is how modest some of the homes are, compared to the mega mansions of today. The price guide isn't very useful, however. In addition, I would have preferred more about the history of the house rather than the brief star bios. For example, I'd love to know if the house still stands--or even have comparison contemporary photographs of the house/site. There are also the inevitable typos. Perhaps the most obvious one is "Clarke Gable." And why no index for a relatively small book? Still, no book is perfect and this one is gorgeous--you won't regret your purchase if you're a fan of old Hollywood. Some of my favorites are the residences of Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert, Eleanor Powell, and William Powell.
Very quick read. Good book to take on vacation or read in bed. The 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's were great times for actors in Hollywood and their homes clearly showed how well they did.
I enjoyed the pictures of homes in this book. I will keep it in my collection. I hope one day they will do an updated version. The book arrived in great condition.
This is a great book for any hollywood fan. I find it hardto put it down.
This book is full of treasures in that old Hollywood glamour of the thirties and forties. I don't collect these postcards, but I am a film buff, especially where the nineteen thirties are concerned. You will love the text about the stars by photos of their homes. Beautiful gardens seem to be a staple as California has wonderful weather and it is fun to see what early Hollywood looked like. There are many homes that are surprisingly modest, yet beautiful with the Mexican tile and architecture. They are far from cold clinical mansions, but warm cozy homes that make you think of walking in a lovely garden with guests. One of my favorites was Judy Garland's home. There was a charming bridge with flowers everywhere that had a fantasy look to it. Perfect to dream by. If you love vintage Hollywood or the stars, you will love this book. It will make a great addition to your collection of books on Hollywood history. I highly recommend it.
