Since New Amsterdam became New York in 1664, constant change and development has been its driving force. Today, it is America's densest urban environment and most vital city, boasting one of the most recognizable skylines in the world.- New York Then and Now places today's post 9/11 cityscape within the context of history, reflecting the changing and enduring aspects of life in the Big Apple.- Remarkable past-and-present photographs showcase Manhattan's development and the amazing architecture that defines the city. See side-by-side images of the lavish Waldorf-Astoria, Radio City Music Hall, Union Square, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Penn Station, Empire State Building, and the Chrysler Building.- The Twin Towers, part of the World Trade Center, redefined the Manhattan skyline when they opened in 1976. After the tragedies of 9/11, the skyline is defined as much by their absence.- New York continues to be one of the most popular destinations in the world—everyone who has experienced the energy and magic of the Big Apple will want New York Then and Now. It's the perfect souvenir or gift!

This is a great book. I loved all the history but really this one is about the pictures. I loved the juxtaposition of old and new. It's well worth the price and makes a fabulous gift.

I bought this table book for my husband's grandmother, who lived in NYC during the 30's and 40's. She LOVED it. She likes to look through the pages and point out areas she has been to and tell us stories about when she lived there. The pictures are gorgeous and the paper is nice and thick. Worth every penny I spent on it.

Yes, true that maybe only a few paragraphs are provided per photo to explain what we're looking at but it still gives a great overview of NYC history. It's a great book to place on the coffee table and everyone loves looking through it. I say get it!

Awesome pictures of old New York. If you are interested in seeing how NY was in the past, then definitely get this book.

This is an excellent book. I purchased it for my daughter who studied in New York for 6 months. There are so many memories in the book for her to keep forever. It is also an incredible book showing how things have changed over the years.Nothing to dislike at all.

The 50 year changes in the NYC landscape is simply amazing. I sent this book to a friend a Finland to get a great overview of the greatest city in the world!

A very well written book, with great photography.

Better than the smaller paperback version, it is a good sampling even though there have been many simular books done like this. Minor mit.- the gold seal ruins the front cover picture.
