I ordered this book for a documentary project I am wanting to create. This is a must have book. I received this book on Friday and did not put it down until I read it cover to cover. Make sure you get this version (updated). Has lots of valuable information on equipment, pre-production, filming, and post-production. It is written very well with a "matter of fact approach." This is a book that I would highly recommend to anyone that is wanting to create a documentary.

Lots of good information, covering a broad spectrum of topics, in a thick book. Because of the scope of the topic, the book only highlights many of the issues and offers solutions, but can't go into much depth on any specific topic because the book would be too long and cumbersome.Anthony covers here much of what he covers in the Lynda.com series he presents, so this is a good form of a reminder and memory-jogger for the Lynda.com tutorials.Been through it once, picking out various sections to read, which provided reinforcement for what I already knew or what I learned on the Lynda.com course.

This book covers EVERYTHING you can think of. Its jam packed full of useful information on the production side of filmmaking. From lighting, to audio, to the types of cameras to consider. Lots of pictures and side notes to help you become great at shooting. This book is an invaluable resource for all filmmakers, its written in a very easy to understand format that just makes you like the author. Don't hesitate, its worth every penny you will spend on it.

This book covers every aspect of film making from a technical standpoint or points you where to go for more. I feel confident that I could start a project and follow it through until the end. Also, the author's fun tone makes it a breeze to read throughout and the blurbs from other experts were also inspiring and helpful.

Love this book. I'm about to graduate from Full Sail's Cinematography program, and I feel this has been the best book and instruction i've gotten. The school just drags everything out and by the time you get to everything that is important then on to more unrelated stuff to what you want to do it just screws everything up. In 32 months of Full Sail you should be able to produce multiple films throughout the whole program instead of building you up over 3 years for just "1" final project. This book is straight and to the point and is, I believe, focused toward the Cinematography professional, any other person can skip the through and make it happen.. Love this guy! Would love to get mentored by him.

Excellent Information for the novice and the professional. Each page becomes more and more interesting and it motivates me the further I read. Glad I discovered this book and I look forward to producing my first docu-feature with the help of Mr. Artis. Thanks brother!

if you have an idea to do a documentary, but you don't know where to start them you need this book, its filled with practical step by step guides and lots of back ground knowledge into the workings of film making and solutions to common problem a new film maker may run into.

This is a well-written guide, and easily accessible for the beginner. It is very comprehensive and definitely worth having on the shelf. Mr. Artis, whose videos on lynda.com I highly recommend, is a lucid writer who avoids jargon and presents very practical advice, not just from his wealth of experience but from people who have made noteworthy documentaries. There is, however, what seems to be a somewhat misleading claim on the front cover - "Any Budget. Any Camera. Any Time." Under the section, "What to Look for in a Camera" (p. 40) Mr. Artis specifically recommends "for serious video shooting" a camera that is equipped with manual controls and XLR inputs for audio. He states, "I think these are the minimum bar to entry." I've got no problem with his recommendation - I really appreciate his strong emphasis on the importance of audio; it just isn't "Any Budget. Any Camera."That aside, I really enjoyed reading it - it is packed with gems of wisdom.
