I loved this text because of the information it carried. It proves to be excellent for those who are seeking knowledge at the Masters level of Human Service counseling. It made many things very clear and contained the latest information. I enjoyed it unfortunately our Instructor was stuck with trying to deviate from the subject matter at hand and promote "Christian Ministry' which was a sheer waste of time. I read it on my own and taken notes and used it in my field several times.

Update: I initially reviewed this book negatively because I found it had so many errors. The author personally replied to this review and I have since been offered an updated copy, so I have changed my review. Thank you. The original review: So many errors and typos in this book its rediculous. Just obvious mistakes, it seems like no one read over it before publishing.

This supposed university textbook definitely shows a very liberal, one-sided, biased views towards Christians and Republicans. This author reminds me of the "moderators" of the recent GOP debates who were there not to moderate but to attack the Republican Presidential candidates. These days, it is pretty rare to find fair, unbiased commentaries on subjects of any kind. I am just grateful that that even having this as my textbook in my graduate studies, I am encouraged by my faith to discern wisely what I read and not just absorb it as the absolute truth.

This must be the most uber-liberal book of fiction every passed off as a text book at a university level. I'm appalled that this is shoved down the throat of students in a masters level humanities course. Sure, many students have enough knowledge of history not to get coaxed into believing Martin's unsubstantiated opinions presented as fact, but there are certainly malleable minds more easily influenced by this garbage. Notice that any positive reviews of this book are either 1) written to describe the condition of the book when it arrived in the mail or 2) written by social services instructors who are obviously extremely liberal and the negative reviews are written by the students forced to read, and examined on the content of, this fictional characterization of human services history and woes. Stating one's opinion is one thing, but attempting to pass it off as fact is outrageous.

I've used first and second editions for my Intro to Social Services class over the years. I was somewhat annoyed to see another edition so soon after the last, but I am very impressed with the extent and substance of the revisions in this edition. While not as much fun as some summer reading, I managed to get through it quite easily over the summer and actually look forward to using it. Martin has brought this edition in line with standards established by the Council for Standards for Human Service Education and in the process really strengthened the text. She has begun to include much more information on the LGBT population as one example. I used to have to augment the text quite a bit, but I do not believe that will be necessary now. I also like the new power point slides that are available with the text. I hate asking students to pay $100 for a text, but I assign and cover information in each chapter. Also, it is the kind of text that should be kept on the bookshelf for reference by those who intend to enter a human service field.

The typos were still present in some spots of the 3rd edition. I do not mind first person writing in introductions or summaries of a chapter, but when you are reading a book for a class that is a textbook the author should not write in the first person. It was distracting in some places because it wasn't clear if the I or me was opinions or had concrete proof from research. All in all it was a decent introduction book for my introduction to Human Services. With a little editing and revisions it could only get better.

Although this book provided an excellent overview of the human service industry, it was extremely biased. I was surprised at the number of direct jabs she had for the Bush/Cheney administration and Republicans in general, that were often times irrelevant and unfounded. This undertone clouded the general purpose of this book for me, and as a result, I began to develop a negative perception of human services throughout the semester. Michelle E. Martin may want to reconsider this liberal bias when publishing her next textbook.

The book itself (at least as far as chapter two) is interesting and I look forward to reading the remainder IF I can get past the insane number of typos. It seems like a simple formatting error involving Th/fi. I wonder how on earth the book made it to print without this error being corrected. Considering the cost of this book, the typos are unacceptable.
