There is a vast difference between a snapshot and a composed photo. Even though the process make take literally a fraction of a second, if your eye is trained to SEE a great shot, you can get those photos that make people gasp in admiration. No mater how long you've been doing photography (I started 50yrs ago) you can always be better. This book is a structured set of exercises to make you better.The book starts with the photo data. You have three things to work with: shutter speed, aperture (how wide the lens is open) and "film" speed or ISO, which these days is a figure your digital camera uses unless you are shooting film. The larger the ISO, the faster the "film" or the less light you need. Then a discussion of focal length, which is important as it determines what is in focus, and how close you bring the subject. But then it moves RIGHT on into the important stuff; how to COMPOSE a photograph and how to shoot the moment. The author gives you a great trick--focus right on the eyes of your subject. But there are a lot more tricks, such as creating the moment (yes, setting up a shot) and also deciding when NOT to intrude in the moment. One trick I did NOT read in here, but which helps me, is to get the subjects not to look at me while I am photographing, if I don't want that posed, "group shot" effect. I get them to look at each other, or even resort to that age-old "look over there!" trick for a more spontaneous effect. One friend of mine, a great photographer, sneaks in behind OTHER people photographing friends, and gets that photo from a different and more candid angle (sneaky!)Each tip and trick has its own numbered mini-chapter. You can focus in on one particular idea and go out and test it. This lets you absorb methods easily and won't overwhelm you.
