Filled with absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous photographs, there is also the story behind each image, the lens and techniques used, some hints related to taking a photograph under similar conditions, and more. Choosing your equipment. “The Nature of the Photo” for each photograph, giving you a little insight into each particular photograph. I can’t think of too many locations that weren’t covered, geographically this is about as close as you can get and have a book you could easily pick up and enjoy. There are several celebrations, including religious ones included, some unique looks at indigenous cultures, and a large variety of wildlife. Seeing the evolution of his photography through the years is enlightening. The photographs are *stunning*… there are too many I loved to name, but some of my favorites began with the ones titled Huangshan, Anhui Province, China (cover photo) and Altocumulus Clouds, Torres del Paine National Park, Chile (which is the first photograph inside this lovely book).April 1987. Farmlands, Andes, EcuadorOctober 1990. Polar Bears, Churchill, Manitoba, CanadaNovember 1992. Emperor Penguins, Weddell Sea, AntarcticaJune 1993. Lesser Flamingos, Lake Magadi, KenyaAugust 1994. "Photographs From the Edge" is a compilation of Art Wolfe's work from the film era of the early 1980's through the digital age up to 2015. Each page features a photo along with a brief explanatory caption, a photo tip and a more detailed personal insight or short story by Wolfe.Granted, some of the captions are a little pointless, like the one defining an avalanche. A little more effort and creative thinking could have made some of these more useful, but most are insightful and interesting.Ultimately, this book is beautiful. It's packed with Wolfe's favorite pictures from around the world, and for aspiring or amateur photographers the photo tips and personal stories are both informative and fascinating.I received a complimentary copy of this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.From the moment I picked it up I loved this book. Reading about Wolfe's experiences and his techniques was affirming to me as an aspiring photographer. I often get caught up in trying to do everything right, but as I read Art Wolfe's tips and stories I was reminded that in the end, photography is truly art...my perspective, my unique way of capturing an image is just that: mine. So you could say this book gave me a much needed reminder that while technical correctness matters greatly, there's got to be room for freedom to capture an image as it speaks to me.This is definitely a coffee table or waiting room book as it's formatted for pick-up and put-down browsing, but it is a book that will be frequently perused.

Photography has been a hobby of mine for quite some time. I've spent time learning how to use my camera and how to use the different modes. I know what all the settings mean and how and when to use them. I've learned the basics of Lightroom and use it with Photoshop Elements. I really enjoy any time spent with my camera, I just wish I had more time to practice! As a busy mom, my children are usually my subjects. When we go hiking or on vacation I get to try out landscape and nature photography. But I always feel like I'm lacking ideas because this is not what I usually photograph.Photographs from the Edge by Art Wolfe is an amazing book that gives me insight into a true professional photographer's mind. Art Wolfe wrote the introduction to his book and described his background in art. He describes his desire to work alone rather than for a large company or magazine, and his reasons for shooting at the locations he does. He says he is often asked why he doesn't have photos of the pyramids in Egypt, to which he describes his desire to explore new locations. His art education and time spent painting his early photographs have given him an incredible grasp on light and color, both of which are quite evident in his style and throughout the book. Rob Sheppard is the coauthor of the book and provides more insight into Art's work. The book beings with some of Art's photographs from the 1980s and continues to more recent work in 2015. Because of this range of time, there are many photographs shot with film and many that are digital. Art describes the differences between the two types of SLR cameras and made me think about things I've never considered, since I only own a digital SLR camera. I appreciate photographers who use film even more now.
