This is a review of the newly-released eighth edition of BROADWAY MUSICALS, SHOW BY SHOW (the prior edition dates from 2011). In one edition or another, this book has been in print for nearly thirty years: that's more than the runs of A CHORUS LINE, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF or MY FAIR LADY -- put together! The nicest thing about this book is the breadth of history it covers in the American musical: from 1866 and THE BLACK CROOK all the way to late 2013 and A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER, still playing at this time. But it is far from comprehensive: it counts full-time shows, successful ones. Although the criteria for determining such shows are not specified, there is no room for the ghastly failure, of course; nor for the interesting failure, the first-run failure that later became a classic, or the disappointing run. Thus you won't see anything about CARRIE in this volume, or FADE IN FADE OUT, MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, or GOLDILOCKS.As others have mentioned, this book is "only" in trade-paperback size, nine by six inches (23 x 15 cm), softcover, and does not contain any color photographs. (At this price, I'm not sure what people expected). As a reference work, though, it does have the virtues of history and highlighting all successful Broadway musicals, or as close to possible as will fit in a book with this format. There are a number of B&W photographs, but not every show gets one. This book is rich in handy indexes: Show, Composer/Librettist, Director, Choreographer, and Major Cast Members. Recommended, but if older editions are cheaper and recent history is not a priority, the last couple of editions will do as well.

Very well made and helpful for Broadway musical goesrs. However, I just wonder why Saratoga, stared by Howard Keel and Carol Laurence, also Cyrano by Christopher Plummer are missing in the book. I hope these should becorrectedin the next edition. I am a Japanese who love Brodaway for a long time. The book is very helpful to look back y memories. Thanks.

This is definitely comprehensive, but it's not particularly attractive. It's all black and white, and feels very crowded. It's difficult just to flip through. Interesting, but not as much fun as I was hoping.

This is my third edition of "Broadway Musicals." This one is updated to include shows through 2013. I find this reference book a most important and valuable addition to my library, and highly recommend it to anyone as nutty about Broadway musicals as I am.

The only thing that stops it from being a 5 star is that it does not come in HardCover!!!

the recipient of the gift says the book is fabulous

For Broadway Musical nuts, this is a must!
