Murder At McDonald's: The Killers Next Door
Download Free (EPUB, PDF)

The chilling true crime account of the botched robbery that would become the most sensational murder case in Canadian history: the Sydney River McDonald’s massacre. It started with a broken conveyor belt. When the mechanical malfunction brought eighteen-year-old McDonald’s employee Derek Wood into the restaurant’s back room, he saw the safe and got a dangerous idea. It would be so easy to prop the back door open, allowing two friends to sneak inside and steal the money. Wood assumed there was at least $200,000 in the cashbox—an incredible haul for just a few minutes’ work—but things would not go according to plan.   The robbery went wrong from the start, and within minutes, a fast-food restaurant in the wilds of Nova Scotia was turned into a bloodbath. Wood and his accomplices attacked the employees, killing three instantly and leaving the fourth for dead. In the safe, where they had expected to find a fortune, there was barely $2,000. They fled the scene, instigating a manhunt that would captivate the nation.   In the tradition of In Cold Blood and The Onion Field, this stunning work of true crime tells the story of the small-town murder that shocked a nation. Phonse Jessome brings a trained journalist’s eye to the case, which remains one of the most horrifying incidents of suburban violence in recent history.

The story of the robbery of a McDonald's restaurant in a small Canada town , by 3 boys who everyone thought were pretty decent kids from good families . One of the boys worked at the restaurant ,so he figured out a plan to get the others in . Originally, it didn't sound as though they planned on using weapons unless necessary, but I'm not too sure . It sounded to me as though they were all pretty heartless and thought they'd make big money at any cost.3 people ended up dead and a 4th gravely injured .The book was written by a reporter of the crime, which goes into quite a lot of detail . Such a senseless crime ,but it helps you to understand what the families of the victims and killers both go through when something like this happens .Thanks to NetGalley and Open Road Integrated Media for a copy of this in exchange for a review .

Detailed, journalistic take on a brutal, senseless triple murder at a McDonald's in Canada and the after effects it had on the lives of those involved in or connected to it. I hadn't heard of this case before but it's easy to see why it was so shocking and devastating and had such a ripple effect. The author is a detail-oriented investigative reporter (Canadian true crime seems to be his forte and he's clearly passionate about it) and his analysis and commentary were well-done, they helped somewhat to put the event into the context of the times and the surroundings. I think most of all the book serves as a sad but meaningful testament to the lives lost and those changed by a thoroughly pointless crime.Especially recommended for fans of this kind of true crime and modern social issues in Canada.I received an advance ebook copy from the Publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

What was great about this true crime book is that the author took the time to introduce the reader to the victims and show them as real people instead of as just a name from a crime. I loved the fact that the author uses pictures in the book it really helped paint the portrait of the places the crime took place. It was so well written and a fascinating case in my opinion, I'm glad I was able to read this. I would recommend it to anyone that's a fan of true crime.

This was an interesting (if dated) true crime read. The focus on the effect journalism had on the case (and the effect the case had on the journalists, especially in a small community) was an interesting one, but understandable since it was written by a journalist who worked on the case.A follow-up would have been good as well, considering the book itself is older.
