This book reminds me of a book I read about 15 years ago called "The Macintosh Bible" which was exactly what it claimed to be -- it was a reference book that you could go back to, time and time again. It was a light-hearted, easy-reading but extremely informative book on the Macintosh OS at the time, and it was one of my favorite books of all time.Then I bought this book. John's created the SAME thing for a much more complex target -- an entire segment of the entertainment industry, encompassing show control, lighting systems, audio systems, video, etc. It's not surprising that he's done such a thorough job on it since he's written the book a few times before. What is particularly surprising about this edition is the coverage on networking. It's becoming more and more integral to the industry and it's a logical addition to the book, but what's impressive his understanding of the topic and his ability to relate it in a very readable, understandable way. I've taught networking at the collegiate level. I've worked with Cisco training products. I would easily take John's book into those classrooms and use it as the initial introduction to networking before I dove into the Cisco materials -- it's that good. It provides a more reachable and practical intro to networking than any book I've read previously.I'm working to break into this industry in my "free time" -- this book will be critical to that effort. I got it on a Thursday, and I had read it cover-to-cover by Sunday. It was captivating and entertaining, while remaining extremely informative.
