I'm on the PhD track and not in medical school, but the book is still great. I have read terrible biochem books, and this is not like those. Lots of color figures, with useful explanatory text means biochem doesn't have to be incredibly difficult to learn anymore. Sure, it's still a tough subject for some of us, and this is not an introductory text (though it doesn't assume much prior knowledge). If you learn what's in here, you'll know quite a bit, and be able to carry on biochem conversations (and understand what's going on inside the human body) at a relatively high level. One thing about Thieme, the publisher: I haven't seen anything bad from them. Their books are reasonably priced, FULL of information, and are incredibly well edited and useful for actually learning things. And sometimes strikingly beautiful. If you haven't seen their Atlas of Anatomy, you're missing out, and need a copy ASAP. Netter's sucks by comparison. Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with anything with that winking skull logo on it.

i really like this book, is perfect because it gives you the theory and clinic inmediately, is perfect for medical students thay want to find the relation between the biochemical theory and the clinic, the explanations are really well made and easier to understand. Really recommend this book.

First year medical student here taking Biochemistry. I haven't had the time to pour over Leningher's detailed textbook and Lippincott's Review is good for skimming through before an exam but not completely my style. I have found a really great resource in this review by Panini! I absolutely love the organization of the material in the book. It's almost like a personal set of review notes with nicely summarized information along with relevant tables and figures. I feel it also provides that bit of extra background information to help integrate the information. Overall, excellent Biochemistry review for a Medical School Biochemistry course and Mini Board exam.

I am a healthcare provider and I also teach pathophysiology. I love this book. Whenever I want to look up the biochemistry behind some patho event, I turn to this book. It has great illustrations and clear explanations. Biochemistry is tough, no doubt about it. If you don't have a background in chemistry at least, this book will be over your head. It looks like a valuable resource for studying for the USMLE or even the MCAT.

Thieme's "Medical Biochemistry: An Illustrated Review" is a premium text featuring among the most amazingly brilliant, easy to follow, full-color illustrations one can find in a textbook. The book includes a scratch-off, which reveals a code to be used to gain access to an online study aid.The book's major sections are Nutrition and Digestion; Membranes, Transport, and Signaling; Cellular Respiration; Metabolism; Genetics and Cell Cycle. Each major section concludes with case study-style review questions with answers and explanations that follow. The information is highly detailed, and the notes are color-coded to classify their pertinence among Therapeutics, Normal or Foundations of the related chapter. The book conveniently features an appendix of Normal Laboratory and Physical Exam values for quick reference. The brilliant organizational structure, combined with the colorful cross section, diagrams and illustrations make this text an absolute pleasure to read. It is a beautiful text well worth the investment for students.

If this isn't your field of expertise or an area you've taken an interest in or studied before, a good chunk of the book might be over your head. This isn't a For Dummies style book. But it is laid out well with great illustrations, it is extremely informative and includes a question and answer section in each chapter. I agree with other reviewers that the table of contents is lacking and doesn't do the book justice. The Preface itself says book was created to fulfill the demand for a book that allows for quick review and self-directed learning...so a table of contents that reflected that demand would have been better fitting for the book. Also, on the very first page is a website link that you can go to if you want to test yourself with 400 factual and USMLE-style questions with explanatory answers (200 from the book, plus 200 additional) but when I went there it wanted me to register for the site with all my personal information required and I wasn't interested in doing that so I couldn't test myself. Those two small gripes aside, I liked this book, the layout of it and the volume of new information I got out of it and I would recommend it.

"Medical Biochemistry - An Illustrated Review" is designed to be used to review for the USMLE, which is required to practice medicine in the U.S. and Canada. Biochemistry of course plays a large role in the exam and this is a well-constructed and -illustrated review guide with accompanying knowledge and test prep questions available online. The language is as efficient as it can be and is particularly suited for ESL test-takers.I am not preparing for the USMLE but this book did pull together the various bits of chemistry, biology, physiology, and pharmacology that I have studied here and there. It will definitely help test takers identify areas where they are weak and provide the material for review and practice.
