A practical application-based guide to adult mechanical ventilationA Doody's Core Title for 2015.This trusted guide is written from the perspective of authors who have more than seventy-five years' experience as clinicians, educators, researchers, and authors. Featuring chapters that are concise, focused, and practical, this book is unique. Unlike other references on the topic, this resource is about mechanical ventilation rather than mechanical ventilators. It is written to provide a solid understanding of the general principles and essential foundational knowledge of mechanical ventilation as required by respiratory therapists and critical care physicians. To make it clinically relevant, Essentials of Mechanical Ventilation includes disease-specific chapters related to mechanical ventilation in these conditions.Essentials of Mechanical Ventilation is divided into four parts:Part One, Principles of Mechanical Ventilation describes basic principles of mechanical ventilation and then continues with issues such as indications for mechanical ventilation, appropriate physiologic goals, and ventilator liberation.Part Two, Ventilator Management, gives practical advice for ventilating patients with a variety of diseases.Part Three, Monitoring During Mechanical Ventilation, discusses blood gases, hemodynamics, mechanics, and waveforms. Part Four, Topics in Mechanical Ventilation, covers issues such as airway management, aerosol delivery, and extracorporeal life support.Essentials of Mechanical Ventilation is a true “must read” for all clinicians caring for mechanically ventilated patients.

This book is unique among its competitors for several reasons: First, it is written by two PhDs who happen to be educators and also two most published researchers in the field of respiratory care. Second, the chapters on basic principles are brief, easy to read, but still authoritative. The technical descriptions of how ventilators work (eg, mode classification) is state-of-the-art and consistent with the most recent respiratory care textbooks. The chapters on ventilator management practical and well-referenced. The chapters on monitoring have great graphics. I was a little disappointed in the two chapters on pulmonary mechanics, as I thought they were over-simplified. This is in view of the fact that the lead author has written an outstanding article on the subject (see Hess DR. Respiratory mechanics in mechanically ventilated patients. Respir Care 2014;59(11):1773-1794). One glaring omission from a book like this is a glossary. But all in all, this is currently the best book on the practical application of mechanical ventilation on the market.

each chapter is about 10 pages, appropriate for reading during busy working hours.written in easy english.recommend for beginners in mechanical ventilation

Dean Hess and Bob Kaczmarek for 40 years have been a standard and on the cutting edge in Pulmonary research, publications, journals, and so on and this their 3rd edition on mechanical ventilation is no exception and is strongly recommended for Respiratory Therapists, Pulmonary / Critical Care Nurses, Medical Residents, Intensivists, even Pulmonologists for their total understanding and practical application on this comprehensive and critical subject.

I'm studying to become an critical nurse and because of lack of a good teacher i decided too buy a thoroughly book on this subject. This book has made all the things that i though was obscure to become more clearly.By the time I wrote this review I not read the entire book. The review is only based on the first part, (1/4 too be more exactly), of the book.

Excellent text for a beginner or seasoned therapist. Well written, concise, a great reference. Written by pioneers in Respiratory Care.

Excellent resource; much more concise than Tobin.

concise, informative and well written. I found this to be an excellent refresher for the ICU

Great book for a refrence and review
