Applying mechanical ventilation principles to patient care, Pilbeam's Mechanical Ventilation: Physiological and Clinical Applications, 5th Edition helps you provide safe, appropriate, and compassionate care for patients requiring ventilatory support. A focus on evidence-based practice includes the latest techniques and equipment, with complex ventilator principles simplified for optimal learning. This edition adds new case studies and new chapters on ventilator-associated pneumonia and on neonatal and pediatric mechanical ventilation. Starting with the most fundamental concepts and building to the most advanced, expert educator J. M. Cairo presents clear, comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of the rapidly evolving field of mechanical ventilation. Excerpts of Clinical Practice Guidelines developed by the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) make it easy to access important information regarding indications/contraindications, hazards and complications, assessment of need, assessment of outcome, and monitoring. Case Studies with exercises and Critical Care Concepts address situations that may be encountered during mechanical ventilation. Learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter help in accurately gauging your comprehension and measuring your progress. Chapter outlines show the "big picture" of each chapter's content. Key terms are listed in the chapter opener, then bolded and defined at their first mention in the text. Key Point boxes highlight need-to-know information. NBRC exam-style assessment questions at the end of each chapter offer practice for the certification exam. NEW Neonatal and Pediatric Mechanical Ventilation chapter covers the latest advances and research relating to young patients. Additional case studies in each chapter present "real-life" scenarios, showing the practical application of newly acquired skills. End-of-chapter summaries help with review and in assessing your comprehension with a bulleted list of key content.

Very serious, fundamental book. May be too detailed if you are not going to the field for life. Every fellow going to pulm-crit should read it so you don't look stupid in the eyes of your RTs. Unfortunately some of ICU attendings have never seen this book too. Once again, it gives you strong fundamentals and as much details as you can absorb. If you are going to deal with seriously sick vented patients, not just few-hours-postop thing, you must read it.

I waited until the very last minute to order this book (3 days before the first day of class)! I was offered a free subscription to Student which has the same great perks as Prime. I ordered it Friday night and it was on my doorstep Sunday night. I was so glad! I showed up to class Monday morning prepared. This book was a required text for my mechanical ventilation class. I have only gotten to chapter 8, but so far it is easy to understand. The book provides plenty of practice work and scenario questions. I found some other supplemental texts, but this book is much more concise.

This book is a must have for anyone interested in respiratory care. This is very helpful within the critical care aspect of respiratory. Pilbeam is used at a lot of the respiratory schools and of the many books I used in school, this was by far the most informational and helpful when it came to ventilators. I still refer to it today.I purchased the workbook to go with this book because I am a visual learner, so reading the book was helpful to a point, but the workbook helped reinforce what I was reading. I was able to practice what I read.

Although it has a lot of good information in this book, it doesn't really follow what is done at the NBRC. So, when you go to take your boards you pretty much don't use any of this information. It is good at explaining the modes of ventilation though. The book arrived on time and in excellent condition. I would recommend this seller

Very informative and a lot of examples that help pertain to each chapter. I would recommend for anyone going into the respiratory therapy program

If you are Pulm, CC, or a RT i highly recommend picking up this book. Probably the most concise and useful information i have come across. It is written so anyone of any level can learn from it. Probably most ideal for Fellows or t hose in the Respiratory field.

The kindle version is awful. It's the PDF version of the book making it very difficult to read from your iPhone. So, if your buy the kindle version, be sure your intent is to read it on a larger device.

This book is excellent in helping a student understand the informaiton associated with mechnical ventilation. I would recommend this book for any RT student or a nursing student who would like to have a better understanding of caring for patients on mechanical ventilation!
