This is the third book of the Finely Focused Photography Books Series by Al Judge.Finely Focused Photography Books is a new series of books from Al Judge for people who prefer to study photography one topic at a time. Each Book of the Series draws upon Al’s longer and more comprehensive books for content. Like all of Al Judge’s books these books contain numerous photos and illustrations to help facilitate clear and concise communication. Understanding DSLR Lenses will painlessly provide help and insight into the often confusing and intimidating world of DSLR Camera Lenses. The ability to change lenses is one of the greatest strengths of the DSLR camera but Lens Selection requires some insight. If you get serious about photography, you will spend much more money on Lenses than Cameras. The good news is that Lenses retain their value over decades and can often be used on with each new camera release. Some Lenses designed for film cameras can still be used on their digital counterparts. A wise Lens purchase will dramatically improve the quality of your images. Digital Cameras don’t have to be intimidating. The underlying principles are surprisingly simple but rarely presented in layman’s terms. Like any other area of specialization, photography has its own language. Fortunately, you only need to understand a few of terms and concepts to get started. This guide to PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS builds a solid foundation of photographic knowledge with easy-to-follow discussions of everything that you need to know in order to get started with confidence. Every photographic term used in the book is clearly defined and thoroughly explained. All terms are also highlighted by using BOLD CAPS so that you can easily find them again to refresh your memory. This Photographic Guide will take the mystery out of digital cameras, camera choices, and Photographic Jargon. This book is filled with charts, illustrations and photos that take the discussion to new levels. You will not only understand the terminology and techniques discussed, but you will have a much better understanding of how your camera works and what is actually happening when you make adjustments. The charts and photos should help you to retain what you learn and put it to good use immediately. Although this book provides a fast-track approach to achieving photographic competence it does not rely on previous knowledge. This book will: Save you a great deal of time and effort. Help you take better pictures and know why they are better. Present the details and language of digital photography without intimidation or confusing terminology – all terms are clearly defined and explained. You may also be interested in Al’s other books. I am not new to SLR lenses and have been shooting for many years as a photography hobby. The reason I got this book was because I am looking at purchasing another lenses and thought maybe this might help me narrow my decision. Although this book does not recommend any particular lenses as I had expected, it did end out to be very informative and explained some details I had never fully understood. This would have been especially helpful to me several years ago. After reading this bok you will have a much better knowledge of lenses lingo and more.

After reading the book I do not find myself lost in a bunch of numbers. I find I can now understand what a lens and the numbers on the Lens are about. I can now determine which lens to use when taking shots. I can also always refer back for reference. I want to continue to gain knowledge in the photography field. Books of this caliber will allow me to do this.

This is a good book for people beginning in photography who do not know much about interchangeable lenses. The book is informative, full of basic information on camera lenses, and he briefly covers the major brands. He covers f- stops, wide angle and telephoto very well. Explains the different features of the lenses. As to a few of his statements about second to none on lenses, that can change from year to year, and currently many professionals are jumping ship from Canon to Nikon for quality and features.

Easy read, easy language. It took me about 30 minutes to read through the entire book. I plan to go back through it a couple more times to reinforce the learning process. I'll be looking for more books by this author.

This is a great book for beginners trying to wade their way through the labyrinth of lens choices on the market. It explains focal length, aperture and other features of lenses in a clear and consist manner. However I would have appreciated a deeper explanation of aperture vs. depth of field and low-light shooting, although admittedly the author states that bigger is better and explains that the reason why is outside of the scope of this book. Maybe a couple of simple images illustrating depth of field may have helped but I understand why the author did not want to go there. The author does a good job of limiting himself to only the basics of specifications of lenses without going into the specifics of creative opportunities afforded by purchasing said lenses. I'd recommend this book to beginners wanting to get an idea of what different lenses do.

Short and sweet tour of the terminology and techniques of contemporary Digital SLR camera lenses: "glass". The best part is the very helpful graphics that make it easy to understand basic lens concepts.Especially important is the "Effective Focal Length" of digital lenses, where the light sensor is smaller than the a "Full-frame" camera, and some of the image is clipped-off. I never knew about Tilt-Shift lenses, which alter the perspective when taking photos of buildings, for example. The author has 12 books on about photography, with beautiful images from Sedona, Arizona. Next on my reading list is the kindle book (also in print) ➽ Artistic Use of Shutter Speed: An Illustrated Guidebook (Finely Focused Photography Books)

I have been studying Photography for Years Now I don't think anybody understands everything But You Should be Confident with Your Basics and do Your utmost to get there This Illustrated Book on Lenses takes You By the Eye and Hand and Gets You there.I am Sure You will Say I Know this or I know that and that's a Good Thing. Then You will continue to Read and will Definitely Say Wow I Didn't Know that or Ahh that's how it works or Finally that's what it means. And that's what this book is about Getting To Know What we took for Granted or just didn't want to look stupid by asking everybody knows that feeling. Take Nothing for Granted in Photography that's Your Biggest Mistake. In conclusion That's what This Book and the other Great Books by Al Judge are about Understanding what You thought You Knew and Truly Teaching You to become that Photographer You Truly Want to Become Enjoy

I found this book extremely helpful. I'm just starting out with buying lenses for my Nikon D5300, and as you may know, descriptions have a lot of numbers and letters. This book broke it down and was extremely quick and easy to read. I plan to get the other books in this series, but I now feel I have a good grasp of what I'm looking for to buy a lens. Yay!
