I’m a big Bettie Page fan. Aren’t we all? But my liking for Bettie’s work stems not so much from her movies. It was probably fostered by the stylized images of her by Playboy contributing artist Olivia de Berardinis (or just “Olivia”) that were almost better than real-life in her sexy and beautiful portrayals of Bettie. Even the real Ms. Page was aghast – at Ms. Berardinis’ paintings of her – when she saw them for the first time late in life. I think she said something modest like, “I’m not that pretty.” (I’m recalling all of this from memory, so some of the details might be a little off, okay?)I’ve always wanted to own some Bettie Page movies, but they’re kind of pricey. No surprise there. But who knows what you’re getting. And call-me-old-fashioned, but I actually would’ve preferred to have IMAGES of Bettie – in PRINT form instead – so I can admire them, much as I might savor a Playboy centerfold. You know what I mean, right?Well, imagine my delight – when I came across this Bettie Page collection by Jonathan H. McAuley – who seems to have the cool job of creating these anthologies for on Kindle. And for the price – it was an absolute steal. Plus, unlike most Kindle photo books, Mr. McAuley put plenty of images on the “Look Inside” preview, and hey – I was sold.This digital tome actually has over TWO-HUNDRED (yes, two-hundred) photos of Bettie TOPLESS, BOTTOMLESS, NUDE – and sometimes from the FRONT. Oh my. (Strangely, the page numbers at the bottom go up to 417, but each photo counts as TWO-pages. Very weird.)I actually have a fairly large monitor – on my PC – so the VISUAL IMPACT of these shots is truly quite stimulating. The photos don’t fill up the screen. And there seems to be a built-in limitation on image size.
