So I bought this dictionary thinking I could use it and carry it around in my pocket as I live in China and do a lot of "real life" studying in Chinese. I had the real Pocket Oxford Chinese Dictionary a few months ago, but like the true genius that I am, I left it on a bench in a restaurant, or fan dian if you will, in Beijing. And to show how good my Chinese is, I didn't know how to say "I left my dictionary in your restaurant." I was out of luck to get the old one back. So, I ordered this from and had a friend bring it to me while visiting me in China. He gave me the box to open whereupon I found that this is only a pocket dictionary if I'm a kangaroo. The book itself is the size of my head (7 3/4 New Era Cap size so we're not talking small here) and about as thick as an acoustic guitar. And someone at Oxford still had the balls to print on the front that this was a "Pocket" dictionary. The only pockets these are fitting into are the pocket in my laptop bag or the back pocket of my mid 1990s Stussy shorts that came to mid calf that I wore because I hated my parents for not letting me dye my hair green.Other than the fact that this is the size of a Dickensian tragedy, the dictionary is good. The words seem to be right, there's a ton of them because it's bigger than a bible, and it's well laid out. It's just too big to CARRY IN YOUR POCKET! I hope I was able to make my message clear, concise, and helpful. Zai jian.

Because it's very difficult to find good chinese-portuguese dictionaries, I followed my chinese teacher's advice to buy this Oxford Chinese-English dictionary and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. It covers simplified and traditional characters and Pinyin forms.

This volume would hardly fit into a cargo pocket let alone a shirt pocket. Not something you could lug around to a coffee shop meeting. Definitely only a desktop book. I found many of the words don't even come close to those used in China. There's a free iTunes download that is considerably cheaper and far more useful than this brick.

The dictionary is very useful and comprehensive and easy to use. While not exactly what I would call a "pocket" dictionary--since it's a thick volume--it is still pretty compact. The dictionary isn't very heavy so I don't mind taking it around with me. It's been very helpful and useful. The text is a good size, not too small.

Okay, so I got this because my Chinese Teacher told me that is would be easier if I got a english to chinese dictionary to like, translate things. So when I brought this to class, I had my teacher look at it and she totally loved it! In the back it showed things like greetings, questions, goodbyes, and even the clock! So now, I can tell my friends what time it is in Chinese! This is better than I expected! I love it! I think this is really great for begginners too, not just people who have been learning chinese for a while. Xie xie! Zai jian!

This is the best Chinese-English, English-Chinese dictionary I have found to date. It is easy for both individuals who have no Chinese language and for Chinese speakers to use. The English-Chinese, although British English, shows characters and PinYin so words can quickly be looked up and the PinYin pronunciation deciphered. The Chinese-English is rather like a traditional Chinese dictionary. One can either look up the PinYin to find the character - both simplified and traditional are listed - or reference the radical, cross-reference the character by stroke count, and find the PinYin for the character, then look it up in the alphabetical listing. No one ever said Chinese was easy for Westerners, but this dictionary really works for me.

Good dictionary, English/Chinese or Chinese/English no problem with this. Some people say it is too big for a pocket dictionary , I say it's just right ( of course it will not fit in your pocket )but is packed with plenty of words, so if you are learning Chinese or if you know someone who is Chinese wants to learn English this is for them.It has Pinyin and Chinese Characters and also the English pronunciations. What a better tool to learn a language than a dictionary, you can't go wrong here.

This was the first Chinese dictionary I bought, to assist me in learning basic Chinese (via Pimsleur). It is still my favorite for learning Chinese characters -- they are printed BIG, and aesthetically fairly nicely. I often turn to this volume to study a specific character and words that can be formed from it.For general vocabulary practice, this dictionary is frustrating. I often have a hard time finding what I'm after in the welter of detail (too much information), and sometimes what I'm after isn't there at all (a surprising amount of what I'd think is "basic" vocabulary is not included.) In the English-Chinese section, example sentences in Chinese are given in characters only, not pinyin, which makes them useful for character study but nearly useless for the beginner wanting to learn spoken vocabulary. Also, "measure" words for Chinese nouns are seldom provided. (For those new to Chinese: Chinese nouns need to be accompanied by one of a great many possible "measure" words when counting or referring to specific items, similar to the way in English one says "two head of cattle." You want to learn the measure word when you learn the noun.)Last: This is a "pocket" dictionary only if you about 12 feet tall with an 80-inch waist. It's a large, thick book.
