I can't explain it, but sometimes nothing else will do but a hardcopy map. I love my MapQuest/Google Maps/etc., but I still rely on my Rand McNally road atlas for planning road trips. Maybe relative distances don't translate as well on a computer screen? Maybe it's more browseable? Maybe because these include scenic routes and give you an idea of the relative populations of the cities you're passing through or near? Maybe the feeling of luddite kinship with past generations of users? Whatever the reason, for the price of 1.5 magazines, this is a great read, and good insurance for when that apocalyptic event renders the computer and gps unavailable!

Like its predecessors, the 2017 Rand McNally road atlas is the paradigm of what a good atlas should be. It provides the information the typical traveler will need. It includes not just the interstates and major federal and state highways, but shows secondary highways as well. All the towns, from the largest cities to the smallest hamlets, are shown. It includes insert maps of all the larger and mid-sized cities and many of the national parks, shows topographical features (such as mountains, including elevations), important institutions, airports (including secondary airports in urban areas), all interstate rest areas, and far more than this. Whether you're frequently on the go or are an armchair traveler, this is the atlas you need.

I cannot say enough about this road atlas. Rand McNally says it all. It is a leader in the industry for a reasons, excellence. I received my order the very next day without paying anything extra for shipping. It is an absolute gem in planning road trips, learning about our highway/interstate system, and just general road knowledge. Worth every penny and than some!

Just what I expected. Have purchased many Rand McNally Road Atlas maps over the years. This one comes with a transparent cover which should help to keep it in good shape for quite a while. Very satisfied

This is a must have if you are setting out for an adventure on the road. I'm one of those people that uses my phone to get me just about anywhere I'm trying to go, but I feel MUCH more at ease with this thing on hand. The details are spectacular, the information is extremely useful and it includes a bunch of extras I wasn't even expecting - one I really like, it lists all campsites, road side parks and state park systems (with AND without campsites). It also has a great mileage chart to easily estimate travel times and a "Miles and Minutes" chart to quickly calculate distance and approximate driving times between cities.

Usually I travel with my GPS but in some areas it just makes sense to have a backup for navigation and you can't beat the good old paper atlas. These atlases last a long time and the one I had from the 1980s finally fell apart so I purchased this one to replace it. I really like that there is some interesting information about road trips and highlights of places not to miss. There is also mileage charts as well as travel planning and on the road resources for each state. It also lists the state's nickname, capital, land area, population and largest city. Excited to bring this along next time I am on the road and would highly recommend this atlas for all drivers.

I spent an afternoon at a well known bookstore comparing all the different atlas options for an upcoming trip across country. I settled on this one as it is fairly easy to find a state and quickly compute a route. Educated in geography and transportation management, this is one of the best atlases on the market. Not the best, but best in the market for now.

We have used this atlas together with our gps for many years to get around the country and have never experienced any problems. The atlas provides useful information not as readily available with the gps, including the"big picture" of where you are going and the possible routes, towns and possible points of interest along the way.
