Maps have been around in some form or other since humans first understood the need to record their physical space, and for the past hundred years, the National Geographic Society has been at the forefront of mapmaking. This Fourth Edition of our popular Family Reference Atlas of the World brings you the world and its marvels—through maps.  Using the latest technological advances, satellite data has been compiled to create some 1,400 images—maps, diagrams, graphs, and tables, as well as National Geographic’s signature color photographs—to allow you to examine the most remote corners of the globe.   In an era when political, health, climatic, and environmental crises anywhere on the globe can affect our daily lives, maps provide a time-honored way to navigate the realities we face. With this atlas, you hold a powerful yet accessible tool to understanding the interplay of global forces at work in the fast-changing but always miraculous planet that is our home.

If all you are looking for is a pretty basic home atlas, one that has the great quality of print and content we all expect from National Geographic, then this edition is probably a good one for you. On the other hand, let me give you these heads-ups about some of things you will not find here. First, if you like an atlas that tells you - when you are looking at something close to the edge of a given page - where to find the adjoining map, you won't find that information provided by this atlas. You'll simply have to search for that next map on your own, and you may be disappointed when you do track it down, because it may not actually be an adjoining map. Second, if you are looking at, let's say, the eastern part of Myanmar and would like to know what cities and towns are located just across the border in China, tough luck. Even though you can see that China is right next door, this atlas grays out China on the map that shows you Myanmar. This atlas groups some countries into regions and only shows you those countries on any given map. For my purposes, these are real drawbacks, but I simply cannot afford Nat. Geo's very large, gorgeous World Atlas, the one that is found in libraries and on a number of cruise ships. There is enough here for me to keep this edition in my home, but it falls short of what I really need and want. I can give it only a qualified, lukewarm thumbs-up.

I was pleasantly surprised at the books contents. Very informative. I am very satisfied, and happy about my choice of the atlas. I can recommend it to anyone as a must have library item.

Beautiful book. Excellent resource for middle school age and up.

This is a huge book filled with tons of up-to-date information. I like having it as a reference as there seem to be so many places in the world with new names. Every family should have a book like this.

This is a good world atlas for me. It covers the world giving information on location, geography, culture, weather and most any other subject that I am interested in understanding. Even if you are interested in an in depth study, this gives one a good starting point. There are many beautiful photographs illustrating the text and helping the text come alive. I expect to use it as long as I have need of an atlas and then to give it to one of the grandchildren or great-grandchildren.

We love this Atlas! Big bright pages with lots of different kinds of maps for the same regions/states/countries, etc. The text is written for older children and adults but the maps, pictures, and graphics will keep even younger children entertained.

Thumbed through & really enjoyed it. I have only looked up a couple of things & page number was incorrect in index on one which was frustrating. Hopefully, that will be the only one, if not will attempt to contact the publisher.

My son loves it being that geography is his thing right now. He is five and has learned his planets, states and capitals and currently working on the countries of the seven continents. We are very happy with our purchase.
